Born in 1968 in the Moratalaz neighborhood of Madrid, Sanz was the son of María Pizarro and Jesús Sánchez. Encouraged by his father, a professional guitarist and book salesman, he began playing the instrument at age seven. While spending summers in Andalusia, he gained deep exposure to traditional flamenco. Although he initially sought to become a formal flamenco performer, he abandoned this pursuit due to the rigorous and demanding nature of traditional instructors, pivoting instead toward pop music infused with flamenco sensibilities.

After performing in local venues as a teenager, he secured a deal with Hispavox. Following the failure of his first album, he briefly studied business and worked in a recording studio. A transition to Warner Music Latina provided his career catalyst. His 1991 album Viviendo Deprisa established a dedicated audience in Spain. Success broadened with the 1995 release 3, which expanded his reach into Italian and Portuguese markets, and the subsequent 1997 breakthrough album Más, which remains the best-selling record in Spanish history.
Musical Evolution and Global Success
Sanz shifted toward diverse textures including jazz, R&B, and soul with the 2000 release El Alma al Aire, which sold one million copies in its first week. His versatility allowed for high-profile collaborations, notably the 2005 single 'La Tortura' with Shakira. He has continued to experiment with genre, releasing titles such as No Es lo Mismo and 2012's La Música No Se Toca under Universal Music Group. His career is punctuated by numerous accolades, including four Grammy Awards and 24 Latin Grammy Awards.
