Foundations and Early Shorts
Before directing, Amenábar worked as a warehouse stock boy and gardener to fund a home camera. He followed this with Abre Los Ojos in 1997, a science fiction film that attracted global interest, leading to the American remake Vanilla Sky. His 2001 ghost story, The Others, solidified his commercial standing, topping the American box office and winning eight Goya Awards.

Amenábar maintains a dual role as director and composer for the majority of his filmography. He wrote or co-wrote all seven of his feature films while concurrently crafting their soundtracks. His 2004 production, The Sea Inside, explored the life of Ramón Sampedro and secured an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
