Aldo Ferrabino

Italian historian, philosopher and librarian (1892-1972)

Aldo Ferrabino served as the president of the Treccani encyclopaedia from 1954 until his death in 1972, overseeing one of Italy’s most significant reference projects. His career spanned diverse professional roles including politician, librarian, and academic, centered primarily within the intellectual landscape of twentieth-century Italy.

Academic Career

Born in Cuneo in 1892, Ferrabino completed his education at the University of Turin. His professional tenure in higher education included teaching positions at the University of Turin, the University of Padua, and the Sapienza University of Rome. He expanded his administrative responsibilities in 1947 when he accepted the position of rector at the University of Padua, a post he held for two years.

Public Service and Institutional Leadership

Ferrabino entered the political arena in 1948 as a member of the Senate of the Italian Republic, serving a term that lasted until 1953. Alongside his legislative work, he held various leadership roles within cultural and academic institutions. In 1950, he became a correspondent for the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and assumed the presidency of the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico. His influence in national organizations continued in 1956 when he was elected president of the Dante Alighieri Society.

Research and Publications

As an historian and philosopher, Ferrabino focused his research on the philosophy of history and Christology. He demonstrated his commitment to academic discourse in 1957 by co-founding the magazine Il Veltro alongside Vincenzo Cappelletti. Throughout his life, he utilized his proficiency in both Italian and German to contribute to his field. In recognition of his extensive scholarly service, he was appointed a Knight of the Civil Order of Savoy in 1970.
