Academic and Military Foundation
Born on 19 April 1982 in Chennai, Krishnan pursued a disciplined educational path through various Kendriya Vidyalayas. Upon entering the National Defence Academy, he graduated in 2002. His tenure at the Air Force Academy was marked by high achievement, earning him both the President’s gold medal and the Sword of Honour. He furthered his expertise at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, Tamil Nadu. His technical qualifications include a Master of Technology by research from the Indian Institute of Science, where he investigated manual override techniques for de-orbiting maneuvers. His academic output includes two papers presented at the IEEE SPACE conference, focusing on attitude control methods for non-docking spacecraft using virtual reality simulations.

Commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on 21 June 2003, Krishnan accumulated more than 2,900 flying hours. His operational experience encompasses a diverse range of aircraft, including the Antonov An-32, Dornier Do 228, Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, Mikoyan MiG-29, and the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI. After serving as a flying instructor, he qualified as a test pilot. His military progression saw him promoted to wing commander in 2016 and group captain in December 2020. In May 2025, he returned to active operational duty for Operation Sindoor before resuming his astronautical commitments.
Transition to Spaceflight
In 2019, the Institute of Aerospace Medicine shortlisted Krishnan for the Gaganyaan programme. His training regimen involved international cooperation, beginning with a period at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia from 2020 to 2021. This was followed by specialized mission training at the ISRO Astronaut Training Facility located in Bengaluru. On 27 February 2024, ISRO officially designated him as a member of the crew for the mission. While the timeline for the first crewed flight remains targeted for 2027, Krishnan continues his preparation as a key component of India's human spaceflight trajectory.
