Early Training and Professional Formation
Born in Urshult in 1932, Axelsson developed an early aptitude for woodworking. This interest led to formal study in Visby. He subsequently sought international experience through an internship at a furniture manufacturing facility located in Munich. His academic progression continued at Konstfack, where he specialized in interior decoration. Between 1957 and 1961, he held positions at various architectural firms, including a stint under Peter Celsing from 1959 until 1961.

Axelsson moved into private practice in 1961, initially forming a partnership before transitioning to solo work in 1967. His portfolio covered a broad range of high-profile commissions. He designed interiors for the library of the Swedish Parliament, the Swedish Institute in Rome, and the Stockholm School of Economics. His institutional work extended to the Värmlands Museum, the historic Den gyldene freden restaurant, Carlskrona Läsesällskaps Bibliotek, and a designated room within the Royal Palace.
Recognition and Legacy
The scope of his work earned him significant professional accolades throughout his career. In 1989, he was inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. His contributions to the field were formally acknowledged with the Prince Eugen Medal in 1994, followed by the Bruno Mathsson Prize in 1995. Axelsson remained active until his death in 2026 at the age of 94.
