Early Life and Artistic Foundations
Born in Gentofte, Copenhagen, in 1980, Obel grew up in a household surrounded by instruments and unconventional objects. Her mother, Katja Obel, played the works of Chopin and Bartók on the piano, fostering Obel's interest in the instrument from a young age. Influenced early on by the jazzy European folk tunes of Jan Johansson, she began performing in a small band at age ten. After attending Det frie Gymnasium, she departed at seventeen to pursue sound engineering at a recording studio.

Her solo debut, Philharmonics, showcased a minimalist approach to composition, relying on simple melodies rather than symphonic structures. The album achieved significant commercial success, reaching gold status in Belgium by June 2011. At the 2011 Danish Music Awards, she received five honors, including Best Album and Best Debut Artist. Her work on the album, characterized by a hushed vocal style accompanied by piano, harp, and cello, earned recognition from critics and helped her secure the 2012 European Border Breakers Award.
Expansion and Later Works
Following her initial success, Obel moved toward a more intimate soundscape for her 2013 sophomore effort, Aventine. She utilized close-miking techniques in a small room to create a sense of scale despite the sparse instrumentation. Her output continued with the 2016 album Citizen of Glass, which won the IMPALA Album of the Year Award. In 2018, she curated the compilation Late Night Tales: Agnes Obel, featuring tracks by artists including Nina Simone and Can. Her fourth studio album, Myopia, followed in February 2020.
