Adrien Brody

Adrien Brody made history in 2003 by becoming the youngest recipient of the Academy Award for Best Actor, a record he maintains to this day. Born in 1973 in the Woodhaven section of New York City, he cultivated an early interest in performance, eventually graduating from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and pursuing studies at both Stony Brook University and Queens College.

Early Career and Breakthrough

Brody began his acting trajectory during the early 1990s. Following minor appearances, he secured a significant supporting role in the 1993 drama King of the Hill. Throughout the late 1990s, he built a reputation through diverse projects, including the ensemble cast of the 1998 film The Thin Red Line and the 1999 production Summer of Sam. His early professional efforts also included training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Academy Recognition

The performance as Władysław Szpilman in Roman Polanski's 2002 drama The Pianist marked a definitive shift in his career. The role required rigorous physical preparation, contributing to his win of the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2003 at age 29. The same portrayal earned him a César Award for Best Actor. He achieved a second Academy Award for Best Actor in 2025 for his performance as László Tóth in the period epic The Brutalist, which also secured him a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe.

Brody’s filmography spans numerous genres and collaborations. He is noted for his frequent work with director Wes Anderson, appearing in titles such as The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City. His broad spectrum of roles includes projects like The Village, King Kong, Hollywoodland, Cadillac Records, Splice, Predators, Midnight in Paris, and Blonde. Beyond film, he moved into television, playing Luca Changretta in Peaky Blinders and Pat Riley in Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.

Television and Theatre

His television work earned him Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his portrayal of Harry Houdini in the 2014 miniseries Houdini and for his role as investor Josh Aaronson in the HBO series Succession. In recent years, Brody expanded his performance base to the stage, making his London theatre debut in 2024 and his Broadway debut in 2025. Both appearances featured his portrayal of Nick Yarris in the play The Fear of 13, a role that garnered him a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award.
