Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah served as the 28th Sultan of Kedah for nearly six decades, marking a transformative era for the Malaysian state. Early Education and Administrative Service
Born in 1927 at Istana Anak Bukit near Alor Setar, the future Sultan was the eldest surviving son of Sultan Badlishah. His early schooling took place at Alor Merah and Titi Gajah before he attended Sultan Abdul Hamid College. He later pursued higher education at Wadham College, Oxford, where he earned a diploma in social science and public administration. Upon returning to Malaysia, he joined the Kedah Administrative Service, gaining experience within the Alor Star district office and the state treasury.

Abdul Halim was designated as the heir apparent in 1949 and served as regent in 1957. Following the death of his father, he acceded to the throne on 14 July 1958. His formal installation took place on 20 February 1959 at the Balai Besar in Alor Star. His long tenure was marked by milestones such as the 1983 silver jubilee and the 2008 golden jubilee. During his second term as Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he appointed a Council of Regency to manage his duties in Kedah.
Tenure as King of Malaysia
The Sultan first ascended as the 5th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 1970, serving until 1975. During this period, he oversaw the transfer of power from Tunku Abdul Rahman to Tun Abdul Razak. In 2011, he was elected to the office for a second term, becoming the oldest monarch to assume the position. His tenure concluded in December 2016, cementing his status as a recurring figure in the nation's federal leadership.
Personal Life and Final Years
Abdul Halim married Sultanah Bahiyah in 1956, who served as Raja Permaisuri Agong during his first term. Following her death in 2003, he remained a prominent public figure. He also entered a marriage with Sultanah Haminah in 1975. He held numerous military titles, including Marshal of the Royal Malaysian Air Force and Field Marshal of the Malaysian Army. He died at his birthplace in Alor Setar on 11 September 2017 and was interred at the Kedah Royal Mausoleum.
