Wade founded the Senegalese Democratic Party in July 1974. Following the introduction of legislation limiting political entities to three distinct ideologies, the party adopted a liberal platform in 1976. Wade mounted multiple presidential campaigns starting in 1978, during which time he also served in the National Assembly. His career was marked by periods of tension, including legal charges related to the 1993 murder of Babacar Sèye and intermittent participation in unity governments before his final presidential success.
The Presidency and Governance
Taking office on 1 April 2000, Wade broke the long-standing rule of the Socialist Party. His administration oversaw the 2001 constitutional reforms that adjusted presidential term limits. He managed regional diplomatic roles, including a term as Chairperson of ECOWAS from 2001 to 2003, and negotiated a peace accord in 2004 with rebels in the Casamance region. In 2007, he secured re-election to a second term before his departure from the presidency in 2012.
