The margin tells its own story. Second, third and fourth were separated by less than two percentage points in a national vote, while the winner sat nine points clear. Among the acts behind Clifton were the South African dancer Musa Motha, the Ugandan dance group Ghetto Kids and an aerial duo, all of them adult or semi-professional.
Contemporary dance on a variety stage
Contemporary dance is not the natural winner of a talent show. It has no lyric to sing along to, no trick to gasp at and no punchline. It asks a live audience and a voting public to sit with movement for ninety seconds and respond to it, which is a harder sell than a magician or a comic.
That two of the three highest-placed acts in 2023 were dancers - Clifton second and Musa Motha fifth - is a reasonable measure of how strong that year's dance field was. What Clifton's routines consisted of is not described in either source used here, and this page does not reconstruct them.
How the show reaches a final
