The 2023 final
Britain's Got Talent series 16 ran in the spring of 2023 with Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and Bruno Tonioli on the panel. Eleven acts reached the final. Viggo Venn, a 33-year-old comedian, won it with 22.5 per cent of the public vote.
Lillianna Clifton, billed as a 13-year-old contemporary dancer, finished runner-up with 13.1 per cent. Third was Cillian O'Connor, a close-up magician also aged 13, on 11.8 per cent. Fourth was the opera singer Malakai Bayoh, 13, on 11.3 per cent. Three of the top four acts in the 2023 final were thirteen years old.
What second place was worth
The Britain's Got Talent final is decided entirely by public vote, and ITV publishes the percentages afterwards on its official site. Clifton's 13.1 per cent was recorded there on 4 June 2023 alongside every other act's share, which is why the figure on this page is exact rather than approximate.
The margin tells its own story. Second, third and fourth were separated by less than two percentage points in a national vote, while the winner sat nine points clear. Among the acts behind Clifton were the South African dancer Musa Motha, the Ugandan dance group Ghetto Kids and an aerial duo, all of them adult or semi-professional.
Contemporary dance on a variety stage
Contemporary dance is not the natural winner of a talent show. It has no lyric to sing along to, no trick to gasp at and no punchline. It asks a live audience and a voting public to sit with movement for ninety seconds and respond to it, which is a harder sell than a magician or a comic.
That two of the three highest-placed acts in 2023 were dancers - Clifton second and Musa Motha fifth - is a reasonable measure of how strong that year's dance field was. What Clifton's routines consisted of is not described in either source used here, and this page does not reconstruct them.
How the show reaches a final
Acts are cut by the judges at audition, distributed across a week of semi-finals, and then reduced by public vote, with the judges usually choosing between the second and third placed acts in each semi-final. Only the finalists face a vote that is entirely public, and only that vote produces the published percentages.
Reaching the final therefore means surviving both filters: the panel's judgement and at least one national vote. Clifton cleared both at thirteen, and then finished ahead of nine of the ten acts that had cleared them with her.
