In 2016, Gitanjali Rao was eleven years old and watching the news with her parents when the images from Flint, Michigan appeared on the television in their Colorado home. Children were being poisoned. The city's water supply had been switched to the Flint River to cut costs, and the corrosive water leached lead from aging pipes into the drinking water of 100,000 people. Lead has no safe level of exposure in children; it causes irreversible neurological damage, reducing IQ, impairing attention, and shortening lives. The city denied the problem. The federal government was slow to respond. Testing was expensive, slow, and required laboratory equipment that most families could not access. Rao watched, and then she started working.
A year later, she had built Tethys — named for the Greek Titan goddess of fresh water — a portable lead-detection device that used carbon nanotubes as its sensor. Carbon nanotubes are microscopic cylindrical structures with extraordinary electrical properties. Rao bonded atoms to the nanotubes that would react specifically with lead ions in water, then connected the sensor to a disposable strip and a small electronic reader. The result was a device that could test drinking water for lead contamination in minutes, using hardware small enough to hold in one hand, at a fraction of the cost of laboratory testing. She presented it publicly when she was twelve years old.
The scientific community took immediate notice. The Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge — a prestigious national competition — named her "America's Top Young Scientist" in 2017 along with a $25,000 prize. The recognition was unusual not just for her age but for the nature of the work: Tethys was not a demonstration of a known principle. It was original engineering design intended to solve a real public health problem, validated against actual contaminated water samples.

Rao went on to develop Epione, a device designed to detect the early biochemical markers of opioid addiction before full dependence sets in — applying the same sensor-based approach to a different crisis. She also created Kindly, a mobile application using natural language processing and machine learning to detect cyberbullying in text before messages are sent, offering users a moment of reflection rather than simply blocking or reporting. Each project addressed a different domain; all three were characterized by the same method: find a real problem that disproportionately harms vulnerable people, identify the scientific lever that existing technology has not yet applied, and build something.
In December 2020, TIME selected Rao as its first-ever Kid of the Year — a cover that featured her alongside an interview by actress Angelina Jolie. The honor recognized not just her inventions but her ethos: by that point she had run workshops teaching her innovation methodology to more than 40,000 students on four continents, with deliberate focus on young people from underrepresented communities. "We have to dig in and pull the inner innovator out of everyone," she told TIME. The magazine noted she was chosen from more than 5,000 nominees.

By 2025, she had enrolled at MIT to study biological engineering, bringing her talent to one of the world's most demanding scientific environments. The child who watched the Flint coverage in Colorado is now building the science that might prevent the next Flint.

Lead poisoning is not a relic. It affects millions of children globally, concentrated in communities without the political power or financial resources to demand clean infrastructure. Gitanjali Rao built a technology to detect it cheaply and quickly when she was eleven years old — and then spent the next decade teaching others to replicate her approach.
