The golden buzzer

Series eleven of Britain's Got Talent ran its auditions on ITV between 15 April and 27 May 2017, drawing audiences of between 10.69 and 11.69 million. Five acts were carried straight into the live shows by golden buzzer. Ikumu, entered as a 16-year-old singer, was one of them, alongside the 15-year-old singer Kyle Tomlinson, the comedian Daliso Chaponda, the dance group MerseyGirls and the comic magician Matt Edwards.

The series records do not name the judge who pressed it, and this record does not guess. The panel was David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell; Ant and Dec presented on ITV, with Stephen Mulhern on ITV2.

The semi-final she lost

The five semi-finals ran from 29 May to 2 June 2017. Ikumu performed sixth in the third of them, on 31 May, and took 16.8 percent of the public vote. That put her third on the night, outside the qualifying places, and she was eliminated. The comedian Ned Woodman, eight years old, finished second in the same semi-final on 21.8 percent and went through. The episode drew 8.24 million viewers.

For a golden buzzer act it was an abrupt reversal: the buzzer removes the risk of the audition round and does nothing about the risk of the public vote. On the night of 31 May, Ikumu was out of the competition.

The wildcard

She did not stay out. The series records note that Ikumu was later sent through to the final as the judges' wildcard, which is why the 2017 final had eleven acts rather than the ten produced by five semi-finals.

A wildcard is a second judgement on the same performance, made after every semi-final has been seen. It is the panel overruling a night's arithmetic — and, in this case, restoring a 16-year-old singer who had been beaten by an eight-year-old comedian by five percentage points.

The final

The final was broadcast on 3 June 2017 to 10.07 million viewers. The pianist Tokio Myers won with 24.2 percent, ahead of the eight-year-old illusionist Issy Simpson on 17.5 and Daliso Chaponda on 14.7. Matt Edwards took 7.9 percent, the singing duo The Pensionalities 6.9 and Kyle Tomlinson 6.7.

Ikumu finished seventh with 5.6 percent, ahead of the Missing People Choir on 5.2, MerseyGirls on 5.1, Ned Woodman on 3.2 and the mentalist duo DNA on 3.0. Of the five golden buzzer acts, Chaponda finished third, Edwards fourth, Tomlinson sixth, Ikumu seventh and MerseyGirls ninth. None of them won, and neither the winner nor the runner-up had received a buzzer at all.

What is documented — and what is not

Firm: her age of 16, her act as a singer, the golden buzzer, 16.8 percent and third place in semi-final three on 31 May 2017, her return as the judges' wildcard, and seventh place in the final on 3 June with 5.6 percent.

Not documented in the sources gathered here: her home town, her school, her family, the songs she sang, which judge pressed the buzzer, and anything about her after June 2017. There is no Wikipedia article in her own name; she appears inside the series eleven tables. The research note behind this record also flags that her nationality is assumed from the show rather than stated in the source.
