SPELLING BEE

🇺🇸 Paige Pipkin

Glitch

Glitch is not a hard word to say. It is an ordinary piece of modern English, and that is precisely why it is dangerous in a national final: a speller braced for Greek roots and French loanwords can be undone by something short and unetymological.

The Washington Post reported the 1980 final under the headline Saved by the glitch. Pipkin, 12 years old, finished as runner-up. The Associated Press account carried by The Ledger on 30 May 1980 recorded the result from the other end: Denver boy wins spelling bee.

Sarcophagus

She returned in 1981 and won the national title on sarcophagus — from the Greek for flesh-eating, applied to a stone coffin. The Associated Press covered the 1981 bee under the headline Letter Perfect the Goal.

Coming back to win after losing a final is the rarest career shape in the sport. Most runners-up age out, or lose the appetite for another year of word lists after a public defeat. Pipkin had one year of eligibility left and spent it becoming champion. The bee's official list of winners records her, without further comment, as the champion of 1981.

The boy who beat her

Jacques Bailly, the 1980 champion, did not leave the bee. He became its official pronouncer — the voice that now reads the words to every finalist and answers their questions about language of origin and alternate pronunciations.

That gives the 1980 final an unusual afterlife. The two spellers who came first and second in a single El Paso-to-Denver contest include the man who has read the words to every national champion since, and a girl who beat the field the following year.

What is documented — and what is not

Documented: her runner-up finish in 1980 at 12, the word glitch, her 1981 championship on sarcophagus, her home city of El Paso, and Bailly's 1980 win. The research record gives her birth year as 1968 and cites the bee's official champions list for 1981.

Not documented in these sources: her school, her family, her sponsoring newspaper, or anything about her life after 1981. Wikipedia has no article for her; searches resolve to the list of Scripps National Spelling Bee champions.

Why the second attempt is the story

A national spelling bee is decided on single words, which means the gap between champion and runner-up is not a gap in ability. It is one word, on one night, in front of cameras. Pipkin's two finals are the clearest demonstration of that in the bee's record.

Over two years she was, on the evidence, the best speller of her cohort. The scoreboard shows one defeat on a five-letter word from the age of computing, and one victory on eleven letters of Greek. The difference between them is not preparation. It is which word came out of the envelope, and Pipkin is one of the few competitors in the bee's history to have been on both sides of that coin flip.
