CONCURSO DE ORTOGRAFÍA

🇧🇸 Roy Seligman

A national first

The Scripps National Spelling Bee draws competitors from beyond the United States, but in the whole history of the competition no speller from the Bahamas had reached its final stage. Seligman did, in 2021, at 12 years old, in a final field of 11.

The setting that year was unusual. The finals were held on 8 July at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex on the Walt Disney World campus in Florida, a summer date and a theme-park venue rather than the late-May finals of previous years, which had run on 28 May in 2009 and 30 May in 2014.

'I feel very proud to have an entire country behind my back,' Seligman told 90.7 WMFE before the final. It is an unusually precise way for a child to describe the weight of representing a small nation, and he did not appear to find it heavy.

How Roy prepared

Seligman began spelling in 2018 and worked with a coach, Katina Seymour. His method was structural rather than brute-force: instead of memorising lists, he learned word roots, language backgrounds and patterns, so that an unfamiliar word could be traced to German, Greek, Arabic or Sanskrit and reconstructed from its parts.

That is how the upper reaches of the bee are actually won. The championship word lists are too large to memorise outright, and a finalist's real skill is etymological triage: hearing a word, identifying where it came from, and applying the spelling conventions of that language under a countdown clock.

His own summary of the work was blunter. 'Hard work always equals results,' he said. For nerves he had one technique: 'Whenever I'm nervous, I just take deep breaths.'

Clypeaster, and Expedition Everest

Asked for his favourite word, Seligman produced clypeaster, a sand dollar, and spelled it out on the spot. Asked what he would do after the bee, he gave the answer that every winner of an American championship is expected to give, but with a specific ride in mind: 'I want to go to Expedition Everest.'

Outside spelling he swims and solves Rubik's cubes. His favourite subject is mathematics. At 12 he had not settled on what he wanted to do for a living, which is the correct answer at 12.

What is known since

The report used for this page was published on the day of the final, and it does not say how Seligman placed. No later source was consulted here, so this page does not state his finishing position, whether he returned to the bee in a subsequent year, or what he is doing now. He would be in his late teens at the time of writing.

That gap is worth stating plainly rather than filling. Coverage of child competitors is heavily front-loaded: a great deal is published in the week of the event and very little afterwards, and the difference between a documented fact and a plausible assumption is easiest to lose in exactly that gap.

What is documented, and what is not

Firm: Seligman was 12 in July 2021; he is from the Bahamas; he was the first speller from the Bahamas to reach the Scripps National Spelling Bee finals; he was one of 11 finalists; the finals were held on 8 July 2021 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex at Walt Disney World; he started spelling in 2018 and was coached by Katina Seymour; he studies word roots and etymology across German, Greek, Arabic and Sanskrit; his favourite word is clypeaster; he swims, solves Rubik's cubes and names mathematics as his favourite subject.

Not documented: his exact date of birth, his school and grade, his parents and siblings, where in the Bahamas he lives, how he placed in the final, and anything about him since July 2021. He was a child at the time of the coverage, and this page includes nothing about him that he and his family did not say publicly.
