The golden buzzer
Series eleven of Britain's Got Talent ran its auditions on ITV from 15 April to 27 May 2017, with audiences between 10.69 and 11.69 million. Five acts were sent straight to the live shows by golden buzzer: Tomlinson, listed as a 15-year-old singer; the 16-year-old singer Sarah Ikumu; the stand-up comedian Daliso Chaponda, 37; the contemporary dance group MerseyGirls, aged 14 to 17; and the comic magician Matt Edwards, 34.

Tomlinson followed on 6.7 percent, sixth of eleven, ahead of Sarah Ikumu on 5.6, the Missing People Choir on 5.2, MerseyGirls on 5.1, the comedian Ned Woodman on 3.2 and the mentalist duo DNA on 3.0. The gap between fifth and sixth was two tenths of a percentage point.
What a golden buzzer was worth that year
Series eleven is a clean test of the golden buzzer, because all five recipients can be tracked to the end. Chaponda finished third, Edwards fourth, Tomlinson sixth, Ikumu seventh and MerseyGirls ninth. None of them won.
The winner, Tokio Myers, had no buzzer at all, and neither did the runner-up, Issy Simpson, who reached the final by taking her semi-final's public vote outright. On the evidence of that series, the buzzer is a fast route into the live rounds and no guarantee of anything after them. Tomlinson used it to get to a final that 10.07 million people watched — which is the part of the record that is beyond dispute.
