The golden buzzer

Series eleven of Britain's Got Talent ran its auditions on ITV from 15 April to 27 May 2017, with audiences between 10.69 and 11.69 million. Five acts were sent straight to the live shows by golden buzzer: Tomlinson, listed as a 15-year-old singer; the 16-year-old singer Sarah Ikumu; the stand-up comedian Daliso Chaponda, 37; the contemporary dance group MerseyGirls, aged 14 to 17; and the comic magician Matt Edwards, 34.

The series records do not state which judge pressed the buzzer for him, and this record does not guess. The panel that year was David Walliams, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Simon Cowell, with Ant and Dec presenting on ITV and Stephen Mulhern on ITV2.

The semi-final

Five semi-finals were staged between 29 May and 2 June 2017. Tomlinson performed fourth in the first of them, on 29 May, and took 28.1 percent of the vote, finishing second on the night and going through to the final. That semi-final drew 9.75 million viewers, the largest audience of the five.

Twenty-eight percent is a heavy share in a field of eight or nine acts. It is worth setting against what came next, because the two numbers belong to different contests: a semi-final splits a night's vote between the acts on that night, while a final splits it across everyone left.

The final

The series eleven final was broadcast on 3 June 2017 to 10.07 million viewers. Eleven acts performed. The pianist Tokio Myers won with 24.2 percent; the eight-year-old illusionist Issy Simpson came second on 17.5; Daliso Chaponda was third on 14.7 and Matt Edwards fourth on 7.9.

The singing duo The Pensionalities, aged 84 and 75, took 6.9 percent for fifth. Tomlinson followed on 6.7 percent, sixth of eleven, ahead of Sarah Ikumu on 5.6, the Missing People Choir on 5.2, MerseyGirls on 5.1, the comedian Ned Woodman on 3.2 and the mentalist duo DNA on 3.0. The gap between fifth and sixth was two tenths of a percentage point.

What a golden buzzer was worth that year

Series eleven is a clean test of the golden buzzer, because all five recipients can be tracked to the end. Chaponda finished third, Edwards fourth, Tomlinson sixth, Ikumu seventh and MerseyGirls ninth. None of them won.

The winner, Tokio Myers, had no buzzer at all, and neither did the runner-up, Issy Simpson, who reached the final by taking her semi-final's public vote outright. On the evidence of that series, the buzzer is a fast route into the live rounds and no guarantee of anything after them. Tomlinson used it to get to a final that 10.07 million people watched — which is the part of the record that is beyond dispute.

Not documented in the sources gathered here: his home town, his school, his family, who he sang with before the show, the songs he chose, which judge pressed the buzzer, and anything about him after June 2017. There is no Wikipedia article in his own name. The research note behind this record also flags that his nationality is assumed from the show rather than stated in the table.
