🇺🇸 Daniel Greenblatt

The four letters that ended the bee

The 1984 National Spelling Bee closed in Washington with a word most Americans could already spell. Greenblatt, then 13, was given luge, a small racing sled, and got it right. The Washington Post reported the finish on 1 June 1984 under the headline "To Win Is To 'L-u-g-e'". An Associated Press account carried the same day by the Deseret News made the same observation from the other direction: luge, for this speller, was more than a sled.

The word is an oddity in a competition remembered for long Greek and Latin constructions. Bee finals turn on words such as vivisepulture and bougainvillea; luge, at four letters, is the shortest word ever to decide a national title. The runner-up that year was Amy McWhirter.

Sent to Washington by a weekly paper

Spellers do not enter the national finals directly. Each arrives through a sponsor, historically a local newspaper that runs a regional bee and pays to send its winner to Washington. Greenblatt's sponsor was the Loudoun Times-Mirror, and his victory made him the first champion sponsored by a weekly rather than a daily paper.

That detail is a small piece of American media history as much as spelling history. For most of the twentieth century the bee ran on the circulation maps of daily newspapers; a weekly in a Virginia suburb producing a national champion was a break in the pattern. The 1984 reports record the result, the word and the sponsorship rather than any training regime.

The fame, and the retreat from it

TIME revisited past champions in May 2016 and found Greenblatt ambivalent about what the title brought. He had enjoyed competing alongside what he called "like-minded weirdos". The fame afterwards was another matter: television appearances in several cities and a spell-off with Johnny Carson left him exhausted by celebrity and drawn instead to work behind the scenes.

He returned to the subject in May 2025, when NPR marked the bee's hundredth edition by asking former winners to reflect as a new champion was crowned. Greenblatt's summary of the experience was blunt: "Everything was spell till you drop."

Where Daniel Greenblatt is now

According to TIME, Greenblatt studied computer science at the College of William and Mary as an undergraduate and took a master's in the subject at James Madison University. By 2016 the magazine described him as a software engineer at a San Francisco startup who also worked as a voice actor, a combination that fits the preference for backstage work he described in the same piece.

Nothing in the record assembled here updates that beyond his 2025 remarks to NPR. His employer, his current projects and his family are not documented in these sources, and geniuses.club does not report them.

Why a 1984 title is still searched

The Scripps National Spelling Bee reached its hundredth edition in 2025, NPR reported, which makes its champions one of the longest continuous records of American childhood achievement: a name, a year and a word, published annually since the 1920s. That list is why a Virginia teenager from 1984 is still a search query four decades later.

The other reason is the word itself. Luge is short, familiar and utterly unlike the mouthfuls the bee is known for, and it has become a fixture of trivia about the competition. Greenblatt's name travels with it.
