Sent to Washington by a weekly paper
Spellers do not enter the national finals directly. Each arrives through a sponsor, historically a local newspaper that runs a regional bee and pays to send its winner to Washington. Greenblatt's sponsor was the Loudoun Times-Mirror, and his victory made him the first champion sponsored by a weekly rather than a daily paper.
That detail is a small piece of American media history as much as spelling history. For most of the twentieth century the bee ran on the circulation maps of daily newspapers; a weekly in a Virginia suburb producing a national champion was a break in the pattern. The 1984 reports record the result, the word and the sponsorship rather than any training regime.
The fame, and the retreat from it
TIME revisited past champions in May 2016 and found Greenblatt ambivalent about what the title brought. He had enjoyed competing alongside what he called "like-minded weirdos". The fame afterwards was another matter: television appearances in several cities and a spell-off with Johnny Carson left him exhausted by celebrity and drawn instead to work behind the scenes.
He returned to the subject in May 2025, when NPR marked the bee's hundredth edition by asking former winners to reflect as a new champion was crowned. Greenblatt's summary of the experience was blunt: "Everything was spell till you drop."
