🇵🇰 Babar Iqbal

Four records by twelve

In July 2009 ProPakistani reported that a 12-year-old had secured his fourth world record. The records concerned professional information technology certifications, industry qualifications normally taken by working engineers, and the claim in each case was to be the youngest person to have passed them.

The best known was the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist qualification, which he sat in Dubai. These are vendor examinations with fixed syllabuses and no age concession: a candidate either answers the questions or does not.

A paper at fourteen

The certifications were the start. In February 2012 ProPakistani reported another record, and the research record used for this page notes that at 14 a paper of his on digital forensics was accepted for an IEEE conference. Digital forensics is the discipline of recovering and analysing evidence from computer systems.

Acceptance at an IEEE conference means the work passed a review process designed for professional researchers. It is a considerably harder threshold than a certification examination, and it is the strongest item in his early record.

A national story

Iqbal became one of Pakistan's best-known child achievers, covered extensively by the country's technology press and cited regularly in lists of young record holders. He was born, according to profile material, on 2 March 1997, in Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

That kind of national prominence in childhood has a long tail. His name has remained searchable for more than fifteen years, largely on the strength of coverage published when he was 12.

What is reported since

In January 2023 ProPakistani reported that Iqbal had been booked in two murder cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in connection with a land dispute. TechJuice reported the same development.

These are reported charges, not a conviction. Being booked in Pakistan means a First Information Report has been registered with police; it initiates a process rather than concluding one. No source used here reports a trial, a verdict or any outcome, and no source records any response from him. This page states what the outlets published, and nothing beyond it. Anyone reading it should hold the ordinary presumption that a person facing charges has not been found guilty of anything.

How to read a childhood record

Certification records of the kind Iqbal set are a particular genre. They are real: a vendor examination is passed or failed, and the youngest-candidate claims were reported by technology press that could check them. They are also narrow. A certification tests whether someone can operate a specific set of products, and an unusually young person passing one demonstrates focus, memory and access to preparation material rather than a general capacity.

The IEEE paper is the more interesting entry, because peer review asks for something a syllabus cannot: an original contribution. Taken together, the record documents a child in Dera Ismail Khan who did difficult technical things very early and was celebrated nationally for it. What happened afterwards is a separate matter, reported here because the published record contains it, and reported as charges only, because that is all the sources establish.
