In July 2009 ProPakistani reported that a 12-year-old had secured his fourth world record. The records concerned professional information technology certifications, industry qualifications normally taken by working engineers, and the claim in each case was to be the youngest person to have passed them.
The best known was the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist qualification, which he sat in Dubai. These are vendor examinations with fixed syllabuses and no age concession: a candidate either answers the questions or does not.
A paper at fourteen
The certifications were the start. In February 2012 ProPakistani reported another record, and the research record used for this page notes that at 14 a paper of his on digital forensics was accepted for an IEEE conference. Digital forensics is the discipline of recovering and analysing evidence from computer systems.
Acceptance at an IEEE conference means the work passed a review process designed for professional researchers. It is a considerably harder threshold than a certification examination, and it is the strongest item in his early record.
A national story
Iqbal became one of Pakistan's best-known child achievers, covered extensively by the country's technology press and cited regularly in lists of young record holders. He was born, according to profile material, on 2 March 1997, in Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
