What happened

The report is dated 24 January 2011 and is brief in the way that examination stories usually are. Shahid, from Islamabad, attended a private school, entered 24 subjects at Cambridge O-Level and came away with 23 A grades. ProPakistani covered the same result the following day under a headline calling it an O-Level world record.

Entering 24 subjects is the part that carries the weight. A standard O-Level candidate sits perhaps eight to ten. Twenty-four means preparing for, and sitting, a volume of papers that no school timetable accommodates, across more than one examination session, and holding the standard high enough across almost all of them to be graded A.

The record, and the confusion around it

The Express Tribune's own account complicates the record claim rather than settling it. It states that Ali Moeen Nawazish, also Pakistani, had set a world record by securing 23 As in A-Level Cambridge examinations. Those are different qualifications: A-Levels are taken after O-Levels, typically at 17 or 18. Whether Shahid's O-Level total broke anything of Nawazish's is therefore not established by that article.

What is clearer is what happened next. In August 2011 the same newspaper reported that Syed Zohaib Asad, 19, of Wah Cantonment had scored 28 A grades at O-Level, and that report explicitly identifies Ibrahim Shahid as the previous holder with 23 As across 24 subjects. Shahid's record, by that account, stood for about seven months.

What he said

Two remarks survive in the coverage. The first is an attribution: he credited his success to his parents. The second is a rebuttal, and it is the line that has followed him since. He recalled a teacher in Australia who had written him off, telling him he would never excel.

He framed the result as a general point rather than a personal one: every child is special, he said, and everyone has their own capabilities. That is a modest reading of a result that the press was describing as a world record, and it is the only substantial quotation from him in this material.

Pakistan has supplied a disproportionate share of the people who hold, or have claimed, records for the number of top grades at Cambridge examinations. Ali Moeen Nawazish at A-Level, Ibrahim Shahid at O-Level, Zohaib Asad seven months later with 28: three names inside a few years, all reported by the same newspapers and all treated as national achievements, with prime ministerial recognition attached in at least one case.

The mechanism is straightforward. Cambridge qualifications are widely taken in Pakistan's private schools, candidates may enter subjects independently of what their school teaches, and there is no cap on how many papers a person may sit. Add a press appetite for the story and the incentive is obvious. What the totals measure is stamina, breadth and examination craft. What Shahid himself chose to emphasise was that a teacher had been wrong about him.
