She was seventeen years old when she met Charles Babbage at a party in June 1833, and she was the only person in the room who understood what he was talking about. Babbage had brought along a small working portion of his Difference Engine — a mechanical device capable of computing polynomial functions — and while the other guests regarded it as a curious novelty, Ada Lovelace examined it with the focused intensity of someone who had found a thing she had been looking for without knowing she was looking for it. The two began a correspondence that same week. It would last nearly twenty years, until her death, and it produced the single most important document in the history of computing: a translation of an Italian paper about Babbage's still-unbuilt Analytical Engine, annotated by Lovelace with notes nearly three times the length of the original paper, containing the first algorithm ever written to be processed by a machine. The machine did not yet exist. The algorithm was real. She was twenty-seven.

Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace — born Ada Byron on December 10, 1815 — was the only legitimate child of the poet George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron, and his wife Annabella Milbanke. Her father left the household when she was five weeks old and died in Greece when she was eight. Her mother, determined to prevent Ada from inheriting her father's poetic temperament and what she privately called his "madness," arranged for her daughter to be educated almost exclusively in mathematics and science — a highly unusual curriculum for a girl of the period, and one that Ada pursued with genuine enthusiasm. She was taught by the mathematician Augustus De Morgan and by the polymath Mary Somerville, one of the first women elected to the Royal Astronomical Society. She also suffered from severe and recurrent illnesses throughout her childhood that left her bedridden for extended periods and, for a time, unable to walk.

Babbage was building, in concept and in fragmentary physical reality, a device he called the Analytical Engine: a general-purpose mechanical computer, programmable by punched cards, capable of executing conditional branching and loops — in principle, anything that could be computed at all. The concept was so far ahead of its time that the engineering required to build it exceeded Victorian manufacturing tolerances, and the machine was never completed. But in 1842, the Italian mathematician Luigi Menabrea wrote a paper in French describing the engine after attending Babbage's lectures in Turin. Babbage suggested that Lovelace translate it into English. She translated it and added notes. Her notes, labeled A through G, went substantially beyond Menabrea's account to analyze the full theoretical scope of what the Analytical Engine could do.

Note G contains what is now recognized as the first computer program: a step-by-step algorithm for computing Bernoulli numbers using the Analytical Engine. But more significant than the algorithm itself were the analytical insights surrounding it. Lovelace grasped that the Analytical Engine was not merely a faster calculator but a general symbol-manipulating machine — that it could be programmed to process any relationship that could be expressed numerically, including, she speculated, the composition of music, the analysis of language, and anything else that could be reduced to operations on symbolic quantities. This was an insight that Babbage himself had not fully articulated. It is, in essence, the theoretical basis of modern computing as a general-purpose discipline. She was also the first person to explicitly address the limits of computation: she argued that the Engine could not originate ideas, could not think — it could only do what it was programmed to do. This distinction between computation and cognition remains central to the philosophy of artificial intelligence today.

Lovelace died on November 27, 1852, of uterine cancer, aged thirty-six — the same age at which her father Lord Byron had died. She was buried beside him, at her request, in the Byron family vault in Nottinghamshire. Her published notes were largely forgotten for almost a century, until Alan Turing cited them in his 1950 paper on computing machinery and intelligence. In 1980, the United States Department of Defense named a new programming language Ada in her honour. Ada Lovelace Day, an annual celebration of women in science and technology, is held on the second Tuesday of October each year. She left behind one published document. It was enough to change the world, once the world caught up to it.

Why This Matters

Ada Lovelace wrote the first computer program for a machine that did not yet exist, in 1843, and simultaneously articulated the fundamental theoretical insight that distinguishes a computer from a calculator: that a machine capable of manipulating symbols according to rules can, in principle, do anything that can be symbolically specified — compose music, analyze language, play chess, render images, model weather. She was 170 years ahead of the technology required to fully realize that insight.
