Karl Marx's IQ: A Neutral Look at the Evidence

Marx fits the birth window of the best-known historical IQ study but was never rated. His record is a doctorate, a decade of foreign journalism and a collected works that fills 50 volumes.

Short answer: No IQ score or scholarly IQ estimate exists for Karl Marx. He was born in 1818, inside the 1450–1850 range of Catharine Cox's 1926 study of historical geniuses, but he is not among her 301 subjects. Numbers online are unsourced. The documented record is a doctorate from Jena in 1841, the first volume of Das Kapital in 1867, and a collected works, shared with Friedrich Engels, of 50 volumes.

The record: in Cox's window, not in Cox's book

Karl Marx was born in Trier on 5 May 1818 and died in London on 14 March 1883. No intelligence test existed in his lifetime. Our Karl Marx profile covers his life and work; this page addresses the IQ question alone.

The only large scholarly source of historical IQ estimates, Catharine Cox's The Early Mental Traits of Three Hundred Geniuses (1926), rated 301 people born between 1450 and 1850. Marx's birth year qualifies him. His name does not appear. A full-text search of the volume returns no entry, and he has no case study and no rating.

The absence is a matter of sampling, not judgment. Cox built her roster from the upper ranks of James McKeen Cattell's list of the 1,000 most eminent people, measured by space in biographical dictionaries, after removing aristocrats and anyone born before 1450. Her volume includes Charles Darwin, nine years older than Marx, and Henri de Saint-Simon (1760–1825), whom it describes as the founder of French socialism. Our guide to historical IQ estimates explains how the method worked and where it breaks.

Why online IQ figures for Marx fail

Any number a list site offers for Marx comes without a named estimator or a stated method, because no study has produced one. That alone disqualifies it. Figures for politically charged thinkers carry an extra risk: they tend to track the writer's opinion of the ideas. A high number flatters admirers; a low one flatters critics. Neither is evidence.

The honest benchmark is what Cox gave the philosophers she did rate. David Hume, for instance, received 155 for childhood and 160 for ages 17 to 26; Immanuel Kant received 135 and 145. Those ratings came from dated school records, letters and early publications, weighted by how complete the file was. No one has published a comparable analysis of Marx's early record.

The evidence: training and output

Marx studied at the universities of Bonn and Berlin and took his doctorate from the University of Jena in 1841. His dissertation compared the natural philosophy of two ancient Greek atomists, Democritus and Epicurus. The subject put classical Greek philosophy at the center of his academic training.

In 1848 he co-wrote The Communist Manifesto with Friedrich Engels. From 1852 to 1862 he served as European correspondent for the New-York Daily Tribune, filing on European affairs for an American newspaper. For years he researched in the reading room of the British Museum, the base for his economic work. The first volume of Das Kapital appeared in 1867. Engels edited volumes 2 and 3 from Marx's manuscripts and published them in 1885 and 1894, after Marx's death.

The scale of the written record

Output is a neutral measure of intellectual stamina, and Marx's is large. The English-language Marx/Engels Collected Works, issued from 1975 to 2004, runs to 50 volumes. The complete German-language scholarly edition, the MEGA, is expected to require 114 volumes. The body of work spans philosophy, political economy, history and daily journalism.

Volume is not the same as correctness, and a large collected works does not settle any argument about the ideas inside it. It does show sustained, high-level intellectual production over four decades, the kind of productivity record historiometric research counts when it studies eminent thinkers.

Marx beside Nietzsche, Kant and Smith

No comparison of Marx's IQ with anyone else's can rest on data, because he has no estimate. Friedrich Nietzsche, born in 1844, is absent from Cox for the same reason. Immanuel Kant is present, with ratings of 135 and 145 on records Cox graded as thin.

Comparisons of work and influence are possible. Our pages on Adam Smith vs. Karl Marx, Nietzsche vs. Marx and Darwin vs. Marx set out the contrasts. Every figure with a real estimate appears in our ranking of philosophers by estimated IQ.

What an IQ number cannot settle

An IQ estimate, even a well-sourced one, measures reasoning ability relative to peers. It cannot tell whether a theory of history or value is right. Readers have argued over Marx's economics for more than 150 years; that debate turns on evidence and argument, not on anyone's score. Intelligence and influence are also different quantities. A thinker can be brilliant and wrong, or modestly gifted and right. This page takes no side on the ideas.

How we assessed this

We searched the full text of Cox's 1926 volume for Marx and found no entry, verified his dates, education and publications against standard references, and confirmed the size of the Collected Works. We excluded every IQ figure without a named estimator and method, and we kept the assessment to documented facts, not political judgments.

Frequently asked questions

What was Karl Marx's IQ?

Karl Marx's IQ is unknown. He never took an intelligence test, and he does not appear in Catharine Cox's 1926 study, the main source of scholarly IQ estimates for historical figures, even though his 1818 birth fits her 1450–1850 range. Figures quoted online lack a named source or method.

Was Karl Marx a genius?

In the historiometric sense of lasting eminence built on intellectual work, he qualifies: a doctorate by 1841, Das Kapital in 1867 and a collected works of 50 volumes. Whether his theories are correct is a separate question that an intelligence estimate cannot answer. Scholars continue to disagree about it.

Who had a higher IQ, Karl Marx or Nietzsche?

There is no evidence to decide. Both were born inside the window of Cox's 1926 study, and neither was rated. Neither has any other scholarly estimate. Any ranking of the two reflects the ranker's view of their ideas, not data. See our Nietzsche IQ analysis.

Where did Karl Marx earn his doctorate?

At the University of Jena, in 1841, after studying at the universities of Bonn and Berlin. His dissertation examined the difference between the natural philosophies of Democritus and Epicurus, two ancient Greek atomists.

Is Karl Marx in Catharine Cox's genius study?

No. Cox's 1926 volume rates 301 people born between 1450 and 1850, drawn from James McKeen Cattell's ranking of eminent figures. Marx, born in 1818, fits the dates but is not among them. The volume does include Charles Darwin and the French social theorist Henri de Saint-Simon.
