At the 16th African Youth Chess Championship in Harare in December 2025, a Nairobi schoolboy took gold in the under-10 section. Nathaniel Manyeki was ten. Two years earlier, in Cairo, he had won the African under-8 title with a perfect score. By early 2026 the Daily Nation was calling him the biggest thing on Kenya's chess scene, and the world rankings agreed.

Harare, December 2025

The International Chess Federation reported on 18 December 2025 that Africa's rising stars had gathered in Harare for the 16th African Youth Chess Championship, and Manyeki came out of the under-10 section with gold. The continental youth championship is the event that decides African age-group titles, drawing national representatives from across the continent to a single hall for a week of classical chess.

For Kenya it was a second African title in three years from the same player. The Daily Nation's profile in January 2026 framed it in the plainest terms available to a sports desk: why Nathaniel Manyeki, at ten, could be the biggest thing on Kenya's chess scene.

A perfect score in Cairo

The first title came in 2023, in Cairo, in the under-8 section, and it came with a perfect score. Winning every game in an African age-group championship leaves nothing to tie-breaks or arbiters. It is the clearest result a junior tournament can produce.

He was eight at the time. The gap between that and the Harare gold is two years and one age bracket, which is the normal path for a junior who keeps improving faster than the field around him.

The Nairobi setup

Manyeki is a pupil at Brookside International School in Nairobi. Chess runs in the family: his sister, Winnie Kaburo, holds the Woman Candidate Master title, so the household already contained a titled player before he started collecting medals.

The Swedish grandmaster Pontus Carlsson, quoted in the Kenyan coverage, called him a bit special. That is a careful phrase from a professional, not a promotional one, and it is the only assessment from a grandmaster that these sources record.

Where Nathaniel Manyeki stands now

As of early 2026 he is ranked inside the world's top 25 under-10 players and finished tenth at the 2025 FIDE World Cadets Cup. That places him in the global bracket rather than only the African one, which is the harder test: the cadet events draw the strongest juniors from Europe, Asia and the Americas.

His stated ambition, reported in the Kenyan press, is the grandmaster title by 14. That is an aim, not an achievement, and this page records it as such. No grandmaster norm, international title or published rating figure for him appears in these sources.

What is documented and what is not

Documented: the under-10 gold at the 16th African Youth Chess Championship in Harare in December 2025, the perfect-score under-8 African title in Cairo in 2023, his school in Nairobi, his sister's Woman Candidate Master title, Pontus Carlsson's assessment, a top-25 world under-10 ranking and tenth place at the 2025 FIDE World Cadets Cup.

Not documented here: his date of birth, his rating, his coach's name, his parents, and any result after the World Cadets Cup. He is a child, and this profile keeps to what Kenyan and international chess media have already published about him.
