NASA turned him down once. He was too young. The book came in 2012, when Moshe was fourteen. "We Can Do" — a motivational work aimed at young people, written entirely by him — was published and immediately attracted attention not just as a curiosity of authorship (a fourteen-year-old writing self-help) but as a genuinely useful piece of work. It argued, in direct terms, that success is a product of willpower and persistence rather than innate talent, and that any child who wants something badly enough and works hard enough can achieve it. More than 6,000 letters and emails arrived from readers. Many of them were about bullying. Moshe wrote a second book: "Bully Down," a guide for parents and teenagers dealing with school harassment.
What distinguishes Moshe Kai Cavalin from the conventional prodigy narrative is the specific content of his message: he does not believe in genius as a special category. He argues, consistently and in public, that he is not a prodigy in the sense of someone born with extraordinary innate abilities, but rather someone who worked extraordinarily hard from a very young age and was supported in doing so. Moshe Kai Cavalin's story matters for what it says about structure. The age-based education system, which moves children through grades in lockstep regardless of individual readiness, is a logistical convenience. Moshe encountered it, found it inadequate, and — with his parents' support — built a path around it. His success is, in part, a proof of concept: the system is not destiny.
His message to young people — that the work matters more than the gift, that persistence matters more than talent, that any child can do extraordinary things if they commit fully to the effort — is arguably the most important thing he has produced. More important than the NASA work, more important than the degrees. Hundreds of thousands of children have read "We Can Do." Some of them have done extraordinary things as a result.
