What Firefly is
Fortune's description sets out three claims at once: the drone is low-cost, it is intelligent, and it is built for first responders to send into dangerous environments to find trapped people. Each of those is a design constraint rather than a feature.
Low-cost matters because a machine sent into a collapsing structure may not come back, and equipment that cannot be risked does not get used. Intelligent matters because the environments in question — smoke, rubble, no light, no satellite positioning — are exactly the conditions under which remote piloting fails, so the aircraft has to navigate itself. Small matters for the same reason: what a rescuer needs is something that fits through a gap a person cannot.
The problem it addresses
Search and rescue in a collapsed or burning structure is constrained by information. Rescuers must decide where to cut, dig or enter without knowing where anyone is, and every wrong decision costs time that the trapped person may not have.
A small autonomous aircraft that can be pushed into a void and report what is inside changes the order of those decisions. That is the use case Fortune's description points to, and it is why the project attracted attention from a business magazine rather than only from a science fair: the value is not the novelty of a drone but the sequence of choices it could reorder at an incident.
What Fortune's list was
The 2016 feature gathered eighteen people under eighteen who, in the magazine's framing, were inventing products, building brands and making money while still at school. Garimella appeared among founders working in childcare, cookies, skincare, travel reviews and consumer packaging — a list where a rescue drone is the outlier.
Fortune did not publish its selection method, and the entries are short: a name, an age, a project and a sentence or two. The list is an editorial selection rather than a ranking, and the entries are capsule descriptions rather than profiles.
What the source does not say
The Fortune entry does not state where Garimella lives, what school he attended, when he started the project, how the drone works in technical terms, whether it was ever deployed by an actual emergency service, or whether the work was commercialised. His exact date of birth is not given either; the birth year in this record is inferred from his stated age of 17 in September 2016.
Those omissions are significant for a project whose value depends entirely on field performance. A description of what a machine is designed to do is not evidence that it does it, and this page does not treat the two as equivalent.
Where Mihir Garimella is now
No source used here reports anything about him after September 2016. Whether Firefly progressed to deployment, became a company, or ended as a prototype is not documented in this record, and neither is what he went on to study or do.
He would be in his mid-twenties now. What is firmly established is a project with a stated purpose and a national listing at 17: a low-cost autonomous drone designed to go into places that are too dangerous to send a person.

Questions people ask about Mihir Garimella
What is Firefly?
A low-cost, intelligent drone for first responders that can enter and explore dangerous environments to find people who are trapped, as Fortune described it in 2016.
How old was Mihir Garimella when Fortune listed him?
Seventeen, in September 2016. That places his birth in about 1999; no exact date of birth appears in the source used here.
Has Firefly been used in real rescues?
The source used here does not say. It describes what the drone is designed to do, which is not evidence that any emergency service deployed it.
How does the drone navigate?
Fortune describes it as intelligent but gives no technical detail. The mechanism is not documented in the source used here.
Did Firefly become a company?
No source used here states this. Fortune describes the project, not a corporate structure or funding.
Where is Mihir Garimella now?
No source used here reports anything about him after September 2016.
Is Mihir Garimella on Wikipedia?
No Wikipedia article on him was found. The entry used here is Fortune's 2016 list.
Why does the drone need to be low-cost?
A machine sent into a collapsing or burning structure may not come back. Equipment too expensive to risk does not get used in the situations it was built for.
