🇺🇸 Kenneth Shinozuka

The problem he was solving

The description TED published with his talk states the scale plainly: 60 per cent of people with dementia wander off, and the consequences fall on patients and carers alike. In Shinozuka's household the patient was his grandfather, who had Alzheimer's disease, and the carer was his aunt.

Night wandering is the version of the problem that breaks families. A carer cannot stay awake indefinitely, and a locked door is both a safety risk and an indignity. The design brief Shinozuka set himself was narrow and practical: detect the beginning of movement, and tell someone about it immediately.

What he built

The device is a wearable sensor that raises an alert on a smartphone when the person wearing it begins to wander. That is the description TED carries, and this page does not add engineering detail the sources do not supply - not the sensing element, not the power source, not the radio.

The research record behind this page adds that the work was entered at the 2014 Google Science Fair under the title Wearable Sensors for Aging Society, and that it won the Scientific American Science in Action award, with the fair's records giving his age at the time as 15. Those details come from the Google Science Fair's own winners list rather than from the TED talk.

The talk

He gave the talk at TEDYouth in November 2014, under the title My simple invention, designed to keep my grandfather safe. It runs about five and a half minutes and has since passed two million views on TED's site.

The framing in that title is the reason the talk travelled. It is not a pitch for a product or a claim about a market. It is a description of a device built for one specific man in one specific house, with the broader application offered afterwards as a consequence rather than as the point.

Why assistive technology from teenagers matters

Most assistive technology is designed by people who have never had to use it. Devices built by family members of patients tend to solve the problem that actually occurs at three in the morning rather than the problem described in a specification document, and that difference shows up in whether they get used.

Shinozuka's stated ambition, in TED's summary of the talk, was to help others living with Alzheimer's disease beyond his own family. What became of that ambition - whether the device was manufactured, trialled clinically or sold - is not established by the sources used for this page, and no claim about it is made here.

What is documented and what is not

Documented by TED: that he was a teenager, that his grandfather had Alzheimer's and wandered at night, that his aunt was the primary carer, that he built a wearable sensor which alerts a smartphone, that 60 per cent of people with dementia wander, and that he presented the work at TEDYouth in November 2014.

Not documented in these sources: his date of birth, his home town, his school, his family's names, any clinical trial or commercial outcome, and anything about his life after 2014. His age of 15 and the Google Science Fair award come from the fair's records. No IQ figure appears anywhere in this file.
