Two records in one ceremony
The university's own announcement framed the event as its youngest graduates in history, and it involved one household. Joshua Ostergaard had made the list in spring 2024 as one of Southeastern's youngest bachelor's recipients at 17. At the ceremony on 25 April 2025 his sister Kaitlyn took that record at 16, while he set another as one of the university's youngest master's recipients at 18.
The commencement was held at 5.30pm at the RP Funding Center. Both degrees were conferred at the same event, which is the detail that gives the story its shape: a family arriving to watch two children graduate on the same afternoon, neither of them old enough to have finished secondary school on the ordinary timetable.
What the university did not say
The announcement is brief and factual, and several things a reader would want are missing from it. It does not name Kaitlyn's major. It does not explain how either sibling progressed so quickly, whether through dual enrolment at a community college, homeschooling, or a mixture of the two. It carries no quotations from the students or their parents.
This page does not fill those gaps by inference. What is documented is the ages, the degrees, the date and the two records, which the university is in a position to state authoritatively about its own graduates.
Where Kaitlyn Ostergaard is planning to go
Her stated plan was a master's degree in marketing at Arizona State University. Her brother's was law school in the autumn, on a path that the university said would make him a practising attorney by 21.
Those are two different kinds of bet on an early start. A law degree converts years directly into a licensed profession, which is why Joshua's timeline can be stated so precisely. A marketing master's leads into a field where employers weigh portfolios and experience alongside credentials, and where a 17-year-old with a postgraduate degree will still be the youngest person in every room for some time.
How American students finish this early
The mechanism is not acceleration inside a university but credit accumulated before arriving at one. American high-school students can take college courses for credit through dual enrolment, and a student who starts early and carries a full load can enter a bachelor's programme with a year or two already banked. Homeschooling removes the remaining constraint, because progression is not tied to a year group.
What the route requires is administrative work from a parent as much as ability from a student: finding institutions that will enrol a minor, sequencing courses so the credit transfers, and dealing with the exceptions each time. This is why early graduates so often come in pairs of siblings. Once a family has solved the process, the second child follows a route that is already mapped, which is exactly what the Ostergaard record shows.
Where Kaitlyn Ostergaard is now
The last documented position is April 2025, at the commencement, with a place at Arizona State in prospect. The sources used here do not record whether she enrolled, what she is studying, or how the degree has gone.
Nor is her date of birth published, or her home town, and the record rests on a single source: the university's own news page. That is an authoritative source for what it states and a narrow one. No second outlet was used for this page, and the appropriate reading is that the facts are institutional rather than independently reported.
