The winning doodle
The 2014 Doodle 4 Google theme asked students to draw an invention that would make the world a better place. Zhang's answer was a water purifier, drawn as a fantastical machine, with the Google letters worked into the design. The official Google blog announced the result on 9 June 2014 under the headline of an inventive doodle for clean water.
Google took the drawing further than usual. Its doodle team animated her artwork before it ran on the homepage, which the Washington Post's comics columnist noted was a first for a student winner. For one day the most visited page on the internet carried a child's picture of clean water.
Three years of entries
Zhang did not win on a first attempt. She had entered the competition three years running before the drawing that took the national prize, a detail the coverage records and one that changes the shape of the story: persistence rather than a single lucky submission.
She was a pupil at Island Trees Middle School in Levittown, on Long Island. The school and the town are the only biographical anchors the sources supply, and they are enough to separate her from the many other people who share the name.
What the prize carried
The money attached to the win went outward. Google gave $20,000 to charity: water in Zhang's name, matching the subject of her drawing, a purifier for dirty water, to a charity that funds clean water projects.
Doodle 4 Google ran as a national competition for students, drawing tens of thousands of entries from across the United States each year, with state and age-group rounds before a single national winner. Zhang's was the 2014 one. The homepage slot is what makes it different from other school art prizes: the audience is measured in hundreds of millions.
Where Audrey Zhang is now
The sources collected for this page end in June 2014. No later interview, exhibition, university place or career detail is recorded in them.
That silence is common for Doodle 4 Google winners, who are children when they win and are not tracked afterwards by the company or the press. Audrey Zhang is also a common name; search results conflate several people, and nothing on this page should be read as describing anyone other than the 2014 doodle winner from Island Trees Middle School.
What is documented and what is not
Documented: the 2014 win, the water-purifier subject, the animation of her doodle by Google's team, the $20,000 donation to charity: water, her school and town, her reported age of 11, and the fact that she had entered three years in a row.
Not documented here: her date of birth, her family, her later schooling and anything at all after 2014. The birth year given on this page is an estimate from the reported age at the time of the win.
