How Historians Estimate His IQ
Da Vinci never took a test. Like all posthumous IQ estimates, his is derived from the scope, difficulty, and originality of his documented work, considered against what IQ level would be required to accomplish it. The estimate is complicated by the fact that his work spans so many fields — mastery of even one of them (painting, anatomy, hydraulics, optics, cartography) at the level he achieved would place someone in the top fraction of a percent of their field. He achieved this level across all of them simultaneously.
The Notebooks: Windows Into an Extraordinary Mind
Approximately 13,000 pages of da Vinci's notebook writings survive — representing perhaps one-third to one-quarter of what he actually produced. They are among the most extraordinary documents in human history. Written in mirror script (right to left, letters reversed), they contain:
- Designs for flying machines — ornithopters, a hang glider, a helicopter-like aerial screw
- A solar power concentrator
- An armored fighting vehicle (precursor to the tank)

The most striking thing about the notebooks is not the range of topics but the depth of engagement with each. Da Vinci didn't sketch ideas lightly — he conducted systematic observation and experiment, filled pages with variations and refinements, and pushed toward understanding underlying principles.
Art and Science as One Mind
Da Vinci's great innovation was treating art and science as the same activity: both were methods of observing nature with extreme precision and representing what was observed with extreme fidelity. His anatomical drawings — based on dissections of perhaps 30 or more human cadavers — were not illustrations but scientific documents, showing muscles, tendons, bones, and organs from multiple angles with labeled captions.
His Mona Lisa is not just a portrait — it is an application of his theories about how the eye perceives depth, how light interacts with surfaces, and how atmospheric perspective changes the appearance of distant objects. Every brush stroke reflects a studied understanding of optics and human perception that he developed through scientific investigation.
What He Got Wrong
Honesty about Leonardo requires acknowledging that his science, while extraordinary for its era, contained significant errors. His understanding of the heart was incomplete. His flying machines, while imaginative, were based on a misunderstanding of lift (they would not have flown). His geology included some accurate observations alongside errors. His acceptance of ancient authorities — Aristotle, Galen — sometimes blinded him to what his own observations clearly showed.
These limitations don't diminish him — they humanize him. He was a man of the 15th and 16th centuries, working without the accumulated knowledge, communication networks, and institutional support available to later scientists.
