🇺🇸 Syamantak Payra

On beş yaşındaki bir gencin elektronik bacak desteği, dünyanın en büyük bilim fuarında ilk üçe girdi.

'Brace Yourself' projesi, 2016 yılında Phoenix'te düzenlenen fuarda iki Intel Foundation Young Scientist ödülünden birini kazandı.

Teksas'ın Friendswood şehrinden Syamantak Payra, Mayıs 2016'da Phoenix'te düzenlenen Intel International Science and Engineering Fair'de 50.000 dolarlık Intel Foundation Young Scientist ödülünü kazandığında 15 yaşındaydı. Projesinin adı 'Brace Yourself: A Novel Electronically Aided Leg Orthosis' idi. Bu, yaklaşık 1.750 finalistin katıldığı fuardaki üç büyük ödülden biriydi.

The award

The Society for Science lists Payra among the 2016 top winners with a $50,000 Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award, one of two given beneath the fair's $75,000 first prize. He was 15, the youngest of that year's three top winners.

The project title is published in full — 'Brace Yourself: A Novel Electronically Aided Leg Orthosis' — but no abstract accompanies it, so the title is the extent of the technical description available here.

What an orthosis is

An orthosis is an external device that supports or corrects the function of a limb. A leg orthosis is the brace worn by people whose muscles or nerves cannot hold or move a joint reliably, and conventional versions are passive: they constrain movement rather than assist it.

The phrase 'electronically aided' in the title points to the difference Payra claimed. The source does not say what sensors, actuators or control system the brace used, how it was tested, or with whom, and this page does not supply those details.

The distinction is the whole claim in the title. A passive brace is a mechanical constraint; an electronically aided one senses what the wearer is trying to do and responds. Which of those functions Payra's prototype performed, and how well, is not recorded in the material used here.

The 2016 fair

Intel ISEF 2016 ran from 8 to 13 May at the Phoenix Convention Center, with approximately 1,750 young scientists drawn from 419 affiliated fairs in more than 75 countries, regions and territories.

About 600 finalists received recognition, including 20 Best of Category winners at $5,000 each, plus $1,000 grants to their schools and affiliated fairs. The three top awards sit above all of it.

The rest of the 2016 podium

The Gordon E. Moore Award of $75,000 went to Han Jie (Austin) Wang, 18, of Vancouver, for engineering bacteria to improve the performance of microbial fuel cells.

The second $50,000 award went to Kathy Liu, 17, of Salt Lake City, for nature-based solid polymer electrolytes intended to make rechargeable batteries safer and more sustainable. An assistive device, a bioelectrical system and a battery chemistry took the 2016 top awards.

A second Friendswood winner

Payra's home town had produced a top ISEF winner the year before: Karan Jerath, 18, of Friendswood, took a $50,000 award in 2015 for simulating a subsea oil spill separator.

Two top-three finishes from one small Texas town in consecutive years is the kind of pattern that usually reflects a strong regional fair and a supportive school science programme, though the source used here does not name either.

What is documented — and what is not

The listing gives his name, age, home town, the award, its value and the project title. It names no school, no mentor and no clinical collaborator, and it reports no testing or outcomes.

It also stops at the fair. No source used here reports his later studies or work, whether the brace was developed, tested with patients or patented. His birth year is inferred from being 15 in May 2016 and is approximate.

What the listing does establish is the judgement: among roughly 1,750 finalists, each already the winner of a qualifying fair, a panel of doctorate-level judges placed this project in the top three. That is the documented fact, and it is a substantial one.
