A stroke is a plumbing emergency. At 17 she designed injectable bubbles to clear the blockage.

Sixth place and $80,000 at the 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search.

Ambika Grover, 17, of Greenwich, Connecticut, placed sixth at the 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search and won $80,000. Her project designed injectable layered microbubbles intended to target blood clots in ischaemic stroke and to prevent those clots reforming. It was one of the top ten results in the 82nd year of America's oldest high-school science competition.

The design

The Society for Science describes her project as injectable layered microbubbles designed to target blood clots and prevent their reformation in ischaemic stroke victims. Two requirements are packed into that sentence, and they are different problems.

Clearing a clot is the emergency. Stopping it from returning is the aftercare, and it usually involves drugs delivered to the whole body rather than to the site. A particle that can do both, at the place where the blockage sits, is attempting to collapse two stages of treatment into one intervention.

Why microbubbles

Gas-filled microbubbles are already familiar in medicine as contrast agents in ultrasound imaging, because they scatter sound strongly and can be seen moving through the circulation. That same responsiveness is what makes them interesting as a delivery vehicle: something that reacts to ultrasound can, in principle, be acted on from outside the body.

Adding layers is what turns a bubble into a system. A layered particle can carry a payload, expose a surface that binds where it is meant to bind, and hold the two apart until the moment of use. The award description states the concept without publishing the composition, the testing model or any efficacy data.

Sixth in the top ten

Sixth place in the 2023 Regeneron Science Talent Search carried $80,000. The competition, founded in 1942 as a programme of Society for Science, reached its 82nd year that March.

Nearly 2,000 students entered and 40 were named finalists; they shared $1.8 million, with $3.1 million distributed in total including school awards. The awards gala was livestreamed and hosted by the broadcaster Soledad O'Brien. Regeneron has sponsored the search since 2017 under a ten-year, $100 million commitment.

Who was above her

First place and $250,000 went to Neel Moudgal of Saline, Michigan, for a model predicting RNA structure. Emily Ocasio of Fairfax, Virginia took $175,000 for AI analysis of racial disparity in newspaper homicide coverage, and Ellen Xu of San Diego $150,000 for a smartphone algorithm to help diagnose Kawasaki disease.

Fourth and fifth went to a generalisation of q-calculus into s-calculus with applications to quantum physics, and to thyroid hormone treatment for traumatic brain injury studied in caterpillars. Maya Ajmera, president and chief executive of the Society for Science, said she was "in awe of their creativity and conviction."

What a top-ten finish means

The Science Talent Search is judged on an original research report and then on a week of questioning in Washington, where finalists are examined by scientists on reasoning outside their own subject. It is closer to a viva than to a science fair.

That format is why a placing carries weight beyond the prize money. Reaching the top ten out of nearly 2,000 entrants means the work survived both the written review and the interview, in front of judges with no stake in the field it belongs to.
