The performance that made the film
Spellbound gave Altman the screen time it gave to the other seven spellers, but his section became the one audiences remembered. Spellbound was released in 2002, earned 5.7 million dollars and was nominated for the Academy Award for best documentary — an unusual commercial life for a documentary and the reason its subjects remain findable two decades later. Eight children were measured on camera at one moment and then let go, which makes any later check-in a test of whether the measurement meant anything.
