SPELLBOUND

🇺🇸 Harry Altman

The performance that made the film

Spellbound gave Altman the screen time it gave to the other seven spellers, but his section became the one audiences remembered. Smithsonian Magazine described him as a hyperactive jokester, and the film's camera caught the tics, the muttering and the theatrical agonies that competitive spelling produces in a child standing alone at a microphone.

Roger Ebert, reviewing the film in 2003, made a prediction that has followed Altman ever since: that he would grow up to be a millionaire or a Nobel winner. It was a critic's throwaway line about a memorable eleven-year-old, and it set the terms on which people would later check up on him.

Banns

His run ended in the fourth round on banns — the public announcement of an intended marriage, read in church. He gave it as bands, which is what it sounds like, and the homophone trap is exactly the kind of word that ends bees.

That is the whole of the competitive record in the sources used here. The film is not a results service, and his final placing in the 1999 standings is not stated in the material used for this page.

The mathematics doctorate

When Smithsonian revisited the cast in 2015, Altman had recently finished a PhD in mathematics at the University of Michigan. Of the eight children in the film, he was the one whose adult career most literally matched the kind of intelligence the competition had been testing.

No source used here names his dissertation subject, his supervisor, or where he went after the doctorate. The 2015 article establishes the degree and the institution; it does not follow him beyond them.

His own explanation

The most valuable thing Altman said in 2015 was about method. He attributed his spelling to pattern recognition rather than to effort or memory, telling Smithsonian: "It was really just relying on my mind's ability to spot patterns."

That cuts against the moral the competition usually invites. Bee coverage tends to be a story about discipline — the flashcards, the root lists, the hours. Altman described something closer to a cognitive knack: the ability to see that an unfamiliar word belongs to a family he already knew, and to construct it from that. It is also, not incidentally, a reasonable description of what mathematicians do.

Why the film keeps being revisited

Spellbound was released in 2002, earned 5.7 million dollars and was nominated for the Academy Award for best documentary — an unusual commercial life for a documentary and the reason its subjects remain findable two decades later. Eight children were measured on camera at one moment and then let go, which makes any later check-in a test of whether the measurement meant anything.

Altman is the cleanest data point in that experiment, and the one Ebert's line invites. He did not become a millionaire and he has not won a Nobel Prize. He became a research mathematician, which is a quieter answer and arguably the one the film's evidence actually supported.
