What the competition is
The International Mathematical Olympiad has run since 1959 and now gathers more than a hundred national teams. It is formally an individual competition: the country standings are unofficial sums of six individual scores, and medals are awarded to individuals under fixed proportions.
Those proportions cap medals at half the field, in a ratio of roughly one gold to two silvers to three bronzes. Gold therefore falls to about one contestant in twelve in any given year, regardless of how hard the paper turns out to be.
Reading a perfect score
A 42 is not a rank; it is a ceiling. Because it cannot be exceeded, everyone who reaches it is placed first, and the size of that group is the best single measure of how a year's problems behaved. Five in 2023 sits between the ten of 2022 and the single maximum of 2024.
What the score says about the individual is narrower and more reliable: six problems solved, six proofs written out in full, inside nine hours of examination, with nothing for a coordinator to question.
