OLIMPIADA DE MATEMÁTICAS

🇨🇳 Chunji Wang

The scoresheet

The olympiad's format is fixed: six problems over two mornings, three per paper, four and a half hours each, seven points per problem. Marking is done by coordinators reading the written proof, and partial credit is normal, which is why an unbroken row of sevens is worth remarking on.

Wang's 2023 entry has one. The other perfect papers that year belonged to his team-mate Haojia Shi, Junhwi Bae of South Korea, David-Andrei Anghel of Romania and Derek Liu of the United States, all listed jointly at the top of a field of 618.

China at the top of the table

The pattern across the years in this file is stark. In Oslo in 2022, six of the ten perfect scores were Chinese. In Chiba in 2023, two of five. In Bath in 2024, the only perfect paper in the world was written by Haojia Shi of China. In Shanghai in 2026, three of the seven maximums were Chinese.

No other country appears in those lists more than twice. Each nation sends at most six contestants, so China's share of the maximums is drawn from the same six places available to everyone else, which is the clearest single statistic about competitive mathematics in the country.

What the competition is

The International Mathematical Olympiad has run since 1959 and now gathers more than a hundred national teams. It is formally an individual competition: the country standings are unofficial sums of six individual scores, and medals are awarded to individuals under fixed proportions.

Those proportions cap medals at half the field, in a ratio of roughly one gold to two silvers to three bronzes. Gold therefore falls to about one contestant in twelve in any given year, regardless of how hard the paper turns out to be.

Reading a perfect score

A 42 is not a rank; it is a ceiling. Because it cannot be exceeded, everyone who reaches it is placed first, and the size of that group is the best single measure of how a year's problems behaved. Five in 2023 sits between the ten of 2022 and the single maximum of 2024.

What the score says about the individual is narrower and more reliable: six problems solved, six proofs written out in full, inside nine hours of examination, with nothing for a coordinator to question.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented by the olympiad's official database: the host city, the field size, China as the country represented, the six problem scores, the total of 42, the rank and the gold medal.

Not documented: his age or date of birth, which is why this page carries no birth year; his school or province; the Chinese characters for his name; and any activity after 2023. No Chinese-language report naming him was collected for this file, and nothing is claimed here beyond the database entry.
