Aristotle was born in 384 BC in Stagira, a Greek city in the northern region of Chalcidice near Macedonia. His father, Nicomachus, was the court physician to Amyntas III, king of Macedonia — a connection that would prove significant decades later. At seventeen he traveled to Athens and enrolled in Plato's Academy, where he remained for twenty years, as student and then as researcher and teacher. He was not merely Plato's best student; he was, in many respects, Plato's most powerful critic, developing a systematic philosophy that challenged Platonism at its foundations while carrying forward many of its central concerns. When Plato died in 348 BC, Aristotle left Athens. He had not been chosen to lead the Academy. He would found something better.

In 342 BC, King Philip II of Macedonia — whose son would become Alexander the Great — summoned Aristotle to serve as his son's tutor. For three years Aristotle educated the young Alexander, who was then thirteen years old, in philosophy, medicine, science, and rhetoric. What influence this education had on Alexander's later career is disputed; Alexander was already exceptional before Aristotle arrived, and his campaigns of conquest seem to owe more to Macedonian military tradition than to Aristotelian philosophy. But the connection was real, and it gave Aristotle resources and political protection that allowed him, on his return to Athens in 335 BC, to found his own school: the Lyceum, where he taught and wrote for the final twelve years of his life.

The scope of Aristotle's intellectual output is staggering. He wrote on logic, metaphysics, natural philosophy (physics), astronomy, meteorology, biology, psychology, ethics, politics, rhetoric, and poetics. His surviving works fill several thousand pages in modern editions, and these are believed to represent only a fraction — perhaps one-fifth — of what he actually wrote. What survives appears to be lecture notes rather than polished literary works, which gives Aristotelian prose a compressed, demanding quality very different from Plato's elegant dialogues. The Nicomachean Ethics, the Politics, the Physics, the Metaphysics, the De Anima, the Poetics — each of these works founded or decisively shaped an entire discipline of inquiry.

His contributions to logic are foundational. Aristotle invented the syllogism — a form of deductive argument in which two premises yield a conclusion — and worked out a systematic theory of valid and invalid inference that remained the dominant framework for logical reasoning for two thousand years. It was Aristotle who first distinguished clearly between deductive and inductive reasoning, who analyzed the structure of demonstration and proof, and who identified the basic principles of non-contradiction and excluded middle that any consistent system of reasoning must respect. When medieval Islamic and European scholars wanted to think carefully about how arguments work, they read Aristotle — or the commentaries on Aristotle written by scholars like Avicenna, Averroes, and Thomas Aquinas.

His work on natural history — what we would now call biology — is particularly remarkable. Aristotle collected, observed, and classified hundreds of species of animals, recording details about their anatomy, behavior, reproduction, and ecology that would not be surpassed for eighteen centuries. He dissected animals, described the anatomy of marine creatures with accuracy that astonished nineteenth-century naturalists, and developed a classification system based on structural similarities rather than superficial appearance. Darwin, who acknowledged very few predecessors, singled out Aristotle as a towering figure: "Linnaeus and Cuvier have been my two gods, though in very different ways, but they were mere schoolboys to old Aristotle." The History of Animals, Parts of Animals, and Generation of Animals are the founding texts of scientific biology.

In 323 BC, Alexander the Great died. Anti-Macedonian feeling surged in Athens, and Aristotle — closely associated with the Macedonian court — faced a charge of impiety. Remembering what Athens had done to Socrates, he reportedly said he would not allow the Athenians to sin twice against philosophy, and withdrew to Chalcis on the island of Euboea, where he died the following year at the age of sixty-two. He left behind a school, a library, a body of work that would be preserved through Byzantine scholarship, translated into Arabic, passed back to medieval Europe, and remain intellectually dominant well into the seventeenth century. The scientific revolution defined itself partly in opposition to Aristotle — yet even in rejecting him, it inherited his questions.

Aristotle's reach into the modern world is so deep and so varied that it is nearly impossible to survey. Formal logic — the structure of valid inference — was his invention, and it remained unchallenged until Frege and Russell in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries built modern mathematical logic on foundations that are still recognizably Aristotelian. Every courtroom argument, every scientific paper, every philosophical treatise that moves from premises to conclusions is practicing what Aristotle taught.

His biological work was vindicated by the nineteenth century's explosion of natural history, when Darwin and his contemporaries were astonished to find that Aristotle's observations of marine life — dismissed for centuries as folklore — were largely accurate. His concept of the telos, the inner purpose or function that defines what a thing is and ought to be, resonates with modern thinking about biological function and evolutionary adaptation in ways that philosophers of biology still debate.

His ethics — the Nicomachean Ethics, built around the concept of eudaimonia (flourishing, happiness, the good life) and the virtues that enable it — represents perhaps the most serious sustained inquiry into how human beings should live that has ever been written. It remains required reading in philosophy departments, business schools, and law schools worldwide. His political science, which classifies constitutions by who rules and whether they rule for the common good, is the ancestor of every subsequent typology of government. The medieval Islamic and European universities were built on Aristotle. The scientific revolution defined itself against him. Both are part of his legacy.
