Nikola Tesla was born in 1856 in Smiljan, in what is now Serbia. The son of an Orthodox priest, he showed extraordinary mathematical ability from childhood — reportedly doing integral calculus in his head, which his teachers initially suspected was cheating. He studied electrical engineering at Graz and Prague, but left without completing his degree.

Tesla's genius was primarily conceptual and visual. He designed machines entirely in his mind — running mental simulations to check for wear and design flaws before ever drawing a blueprint. His discoveries include the rotating magnetic field, the AC induction motor, the Tesla coil, polyphase AC power systems, and early work on radio transmission, X-rays, and wireless power.

His mind was extraordinary but his temperament was difficult. He was obsessive, reclusive, suffered what appear to have been OCD symptoms and synesthetic experiences, and was a poor businessman who repeatedly failed to commercialize his inventions.

Thomas Edison — The Systematic Innovator

Thomas Edison was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio. His genius was of a different kind — less visionary and more systematic. He is famous for saying "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration" — a statement that reflected his working method precisely. He invented the process of invention: the organized industrial research laboratory at Menlo Park, staffed by skilled engineers and scientists, focused on producing commercially viable technology.

Edison's most important inventions include the phonograph (1877), a practical incandescent light bulb and the DC electrical distribution system to power it (1879–1882), and major contributions to the telegraph, telephone, and motion pictures. His 1,093 US patents remain a record.

The War of Currents

The central conflict between Tesla and Edison was technological: Edison had built his electrical infrastructure on direct current (DC). Tesla, working for Edison and then independently, developed alternating current (AC) systems — which could be transmitted over long distances at high voltage and stepped down by transformers for local use. AC was technically and economically superior for power distribution.

Edison knew this was a threat to his DC investment and fought it viciously. His company publicly electrocuted animals — including the elephant Topsy — using AC current to demonstrate its "danger." He lobbied against AC and promoted the electric chair (using AC current) to associate Tesla's technology with death.

History's verdict: Tesla and his backer George Westinghouse won the War of Currents. The AC system they demonstrated at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and implemented at Niagara Falls in 1895 became the global standard for electricity transmission that powers the world today.

The IQ Debate

Tesla's estimated IQ varies wildly in different sources — from 160 to 310. The extreme estimates are clearly speculative extrapolations. What can be said with confidence is that Tesla showed exceptional abilities in spatial visualization, mental calculation, and memory that placed him among the cognitively elite.

Edison's IQ is typically estimated at 145–160 — still solidly in the genius range, but his strength was not raw cognitive speed so much as relentless effort, organizational intelligence, and the ability to assemble and motivate teams of talented people.
