Yiheng Wang was born on 16 December 2013 in China. He entered his first World Cube Association competition in September 2019, at the Shenzhen Open, aged five — an age at which many competitors are still learning the beginner's method. He won his first competition title in January 2021, at seven.
The record-breaking began at nine. On 10 March 2023, at Yong Jun KL Speedcubing in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wang set his first 3x3x3 world record average: 4.69 seconds. The previous mark of 4.86 had been held jointly by two of the sport's biggest names, American Max Park and Poland's Tymon Kolasiński. A nine-year-old had taken it from both of them at once.
What followed was not a single flash of brilliance but a methodical dismantling of the event's ceiling. Between March 2023 and January 2026 Wang set nine consecutive world record averages, walking the number down through 4.48, 4.36, 4.25, 4.09, 4.05, 4.03, 3.91 and finally 3.90 seconds at the Taizhou Open in July 2025. In a discipline where records historically moved by hundredths and changed hands between countries, one child had claimed the whole descent.
The single-solve record came too. In February 2025, at the XMUM Cube Open in Sepang, Malaysia, Wang solved a scrambled 3x3x3 in 3.08 seconds — a world record, later broken by his compatriot Xuanyi Geng with a 3.05. Wang has since posted a 3.06, the third-fastest official solve ever recorded.
The depth of his dominance is easier to see in the rankings than in any single result. By September 2025 Wang personally held the 28 fastest official averages ever recorded, from 4.31 down to 3.90. As of March 2026 he held 71 of the top 100 3x3x3 averages in the world. In a global sport with tens of thousands of registered competitors, roughly three-quarters of the best results ever recorded belonged to one boy in secondary school.
The title that had eluded him was the world championship itself. At the 2023 WCA World Championship he finished second, 0.01 seconds behind Max Park — the narrowest possible margin, with Kolasiński a fraction further back. Two years later, on 6 July 2025, he returned and won it, taking the world championship with a 4.23 second average ahead of Xuanyi Geng.
Wang's career has also been shaped by an unusually public rules debate. In 2024 he recorded a 2x2x2 average of 0.78 seconds, and frame-by-frame video review raised questions about how his hands left the competition timer — a technique observers named 'sliding.' The World Cube Association's Regulations Committee and Board initially declined to apply new analysis methods retroactively, then reversed course; the 0.78 average was adjusted, and a later 0.86 average was also reviewed and set aside. In that second case the committee stated that the timer starts appeared to be unintentional. The record that stands is his 0.88 second average from the Hangzhou Open in December 2024 — still the fastest ever officially recorded on the 2x2x2.
It is a reminder that speedcubing at Wang's level operates at the limits of what human reflexes and mechanical timers can jointly resolve. When a sport's best competitor is faster than its measuring apparatus was designed to handle, the rules have to catch up — and the World Cube Association's decision to adopt frame-by-frame analysis for world records is, in part, a consequence of a child moving faster than the system anticipated.
Guinness World Records named Wang a Young Achiever in its 2026 edition, citing his cube records alongside a handful of other record-breaking children. He is still, at the time of writing, only twelve years old — years away from the age at which most elite cubers peak.
Understanding what Wang's numbers mean requires knowing how the sport is scored. A competitor is handed a scrambled cube and given fifteen seconds of inspection time before the timer starts. An official average is the mean of five solves with the fastest and slowest discarded — a format deliberately designed to punish luck and reward consistency. A fast single can be a gift of a favourable scramble. A fast average cannot.
That is why the sub-four-second average was treated as the real frontier rather than the single. To average 3.90 seconds, a competitor must execute roughly fifty moves per solve at close to twelve moves a second while simultaneously reading ahead to plan the next stage — a form of parallel processing under a clock that most elite cubers describe as the hardest thing in the discipline.
Speedcubing is also one of the few global competitive pursuits with a fully public, permanent record: every result any competitor has ever posted at a sanctioned event is listed in the World Cube Association database, with dates, venues and scrambles. There is no room for reputation. Wang's dominance is legible to anyone who opens the rankings page, which is precisely why it drew such intense scrutiny when timer-start technique came into question.
For a sport whose competitors typically peak in their late teens and early twenties, the most striking fact about Wang is chronological. He has held the world record average continuously through most of the period from nine to twelve. The years in which his rivals did their best work are still, for him, in the future.

Yiheng Wang matters because he did not merely break a record — he redefined the shape of an entire event. Nine consecutive world record averages in under three years, and 71 of the 100 fastest results ever recorded, is a level of single-competitor dominance almost unknown in modern sport, and he achieved it between the ages of nine and twelve.
His career also forced a governing body to modernise. When the fastest competitor in the world moves faster than the officiating standards can resolve, the standards have to change: the World Cube Association's adoption of frame-by-frame review for world records is a direct consequence of adjudicating results set by a child at the edge of human reaction time.
