Ninety seconds
The spell-off is a tiebreaker of deliberate brutality. The first time the bee used it
The 2022 final was the first ever decided this way. The mechanism existed on paper; until that night no bee had needed it, or had been willing to use it.
The reason it exists is that the bee has a history of refusing to produce a single winner. In 2016 NPR reported the contest ending in another impasse, with two spellers sharing the title. A word list that runs out before the competitors do leaves organisers with an unsatisfying choice, and the spell-off was the answer: a tie broken by measurable output rather than by a longer word list.
Six words, and a 12-year-old
Vikram was 12 at the final. The margin was six words in a minute and a half — which is to say he was, for practical purposes, as prepared as the champion and marginally slower under a stopwatch. A knockout format would not have distinguished them at all.
That is what makes the result genuinely unusual rather than a footnote. Runner-up in the first spell-off in the competition's history is a permanent entry in the bee's record. There is only one of them, and it is his.
