Ninety seconds
The spell-off is a tiebreaker of deliberate brutality. Two spellers who have survived a full night of rounds are given a fixed 90 seconds each and told to spell as many words as they can, one after another, at speed. The New York Times called the finish blistering; NBC News called it a lightning round.
Vikram produced 15 correct words inside the window. Harini Logan produced 21 and was declared the 2022 champion. The entire contest, which had run through round after round of single-word elimination, was settled on a throughput score.
The first time the bee used it
The 2022 final was the first ever decided this way. The mechanism existed on paper; until that night no bee had needed it, or had been willing to use it.
The reason it exists is that the bee has a history of refusing to produce a single winner. In 2016 NPR reported the contest ending in another impasse, with two spellers sharing the title. A word list that runs out before the competitors do leaves organisers with an unsatisfying choice, and the spell-off was the answer: a tie broken by measurable output rather than by a longer word list.
Six words, and a 12-year-old
Vikram was 12 at the final. The margin was six words in a minute and a half — which is to say he was, for practical purposes, as prepared as the champion and marginally slower under a stopwatch. A knockout format would not have distinguished them at all.
That is what makes the result genuinely unusual rather than a footnote. Runner-up in the first spell-off in the competition's history is a permanent entry in the bee's record. There is only one of them, and it is his.

For most of its history the bee has been a test of accuracy without a clock. The spell-off added a second dimension — speed — and in doing so guaranteed a single champion. Every finalist since has had to prepare for the possibility of spelling against a timer.
Vikram sits on the wrong side of that line by six words. In a competition that ordinarily records only the winner, the arrival of a new format made its first runner-up part of the story rather than a name on a results table.
