Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods was two years old when his father Earl put a sawed-off golf club in his hands in the garage of their home in Cypress, California, and the child hit ball after ball into a net with a swing that, even at that age, had a mechanical consistency that Earl — a former Green Beret and a weekend golfer — had never seen before. By the time Tiger was three he had shot 48 for nine holes. At five he appeared on The Mike Douglas Show, driving balls with Bob Hope. At eight he won his first of six Optimist International Junior World Championships. The mythology of prodigy is routinely overstated in sports, but in the case of Tiger Woods, virtually everything that would later be said about his freakish natural gifts can be documented, verified, and confirmed by videotape going back to 1978.

Woods turned professional in August 1996 at age twenty, winning two PGA Tour events before the season ended. In April 1997, he won the Masters by twelve strokes at the age of twenty-one, shooting 18-under par — the largest margin of victory in Masters history and the lowest score ever recorded at Augusta National at that point. The win was nationally televised and drew an audience that included millions of people who had never watched golf before. Woods was multiracial — his father was African-American with some Native American and Chinese ancestry, his mother Thai with Chinese and Dutch heritage — and the sight of a young Black man dominating a sport historically segregated at both the playing and membership level of its most prestigious clubs carried a significance that extended far beyond the scorecard. Augusta National, where the Masters is played, had admitted its first Black member only in 1990.

The peak of his dominance came in the period from 1999 to 2002, when he won seven of eleven majors entered, including the "Tiger Slam" of 2000–2001 when he held all four major titles simultaneously — the US Open by 15 strokes, The Open Championship by eight strokes, the PGA Championship, and the Masters. The US Open performance at Pebble Beach, in particular, was treated by golf writers as the single most dominant major championship performance in history: he finished at 12-under par while the field averaged 3.9-over par. He was generating scores that no one else in the field was capable of producing. The PGA Tour saw television ratings for events he played in run 40 to 50 percent higher than events he did not.

"No matter how good you think you are, you have to keep working to get better."

— Tiger Woods

The middle years of his career were defined by physical rebuilding — four knee surgeries, four back surgeries, including a spinal fusion in 2017 — and by personal difficulties that led to a very public fall from grace in 2009. At various points, serious observers of the sport believed his career was over. The question of whether he would ever return to competitive golf, let alone competitive excellence, was genuinely open. His answer came at Augusta National in April 2019, when he shot 13-under par across four rounds to win his fifth Masters title and his 15th major championship, eleven years after his last major win. The roar from the Augusta gallery as he walked up the 18th fairway that Sunday afternoon was described by multiple witnesses as unlike anything they had heard at a golf course, which is to say unlike anything they had heard at a sporting event of any kind.

"My dad used to say that the more you practice, the luckier you get."

— Tiger Woods

Woods's influence on golf is so thoroughly embedded in the sport's modern form that it is difficult to enumerate discretely. He raised the athleticism standard for professional golfers: virtually every top player in the generation that followed him — Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm — trains with weights and physical conditioning programs that explicitly follow the model he pioneered. PGA Tour television contracts expanded dramatically during his peak years. Equipment manufacturers restructured their marketing around the performance metrics he achieved. Golf courses across America built practice facilities to accommodate the new players his television appearances attracted to the game. He remains, at the time of writing, the only golfer in history to hold all four major titles simultaneously, and the only person in the history of sport to have won three different major championships by margins of eight strokes or more.

Why This Matters

Tiger Woods did not merely dominate professional golf — he transformed what golf was as a cultural object. Before Woods, golf was a sport enjoyed primarily by older, affluent, white audiences in the United States and Europe. After Woods, it was a genuinely global sport with a demographic profile that no other single athlete had ever altered. He made golf appointment television. He made golf compelling to people who had never held a club. He raised athletic standards for an entire profession — in the early 2000s, players scrambling to keep up with his fitness regime began transforming professional golf's physical culture in ways that persist today. He also demonstrated, twice — once in building his peak dominance, and once in returning from physical devastation to win at Augusta in 2019 — what relentless commitment to a singular goal looks like when it is carried out across decades. His 2019 Masters win stands alone in sporting history: no athlete in any major professional sport has won at that level, in that context, after that much physical adversity.
