The question that launched Braigo Labs started with a candy wrapper. Shubham Banerjee was thirteen years old when he asked his father how blind people read — a question prompted by a flyer he had seen for a school science fair project. His father suggested he look it up. What Banerjee found was that while Braille had existed as a tactile writing system since the 1820s, the machines that printed it — Braille embossers — cost between $2,000 and $150,000, depending on features and volume. For the 285 million visually impaired people worldwide, the vast majority of whom lived in low-income countries, this cost made access to printed Braille a distant aspiration. He decided to build a cheaper one, using the LEGO Mindstorms Robotics Kit he already had at home.
The LEGO Mindstorms EV3 was designed as an educational robotics platform — programmable bricks connected to motors and sensors, capable of building mechanical systems that could be coded to perform sequences of operations. It was not designed for precision embossing of tactile dots. Banerjee spent weeks iterating on mechanisms that could produce the consistent pressure required to emboss readable Braille characters into paper. The challenge was repeatability: each of the six-dot cells that constituted a Braille character had to be embossed at precise positions with sufficient force to create a tactile impression, thousands of times in sequence, without mechanical failure. He got it working. The resulting device, which he called Braigo — a portmanteau of Braille and LEGO — could print standard Braille at a cost to build of approximately $350.
Banerjee entered Braigo in his school science fair in January 2014. He won. The story reached a reporter, then a technology publication, then the wires. Within weeks, he was national news. A thirteen-year-old had built a functioning Braille printer out of LEGO bricks for one-sixth the cost of the cheapest comparable commercial product. He uploaded the design files to the internet so that anyone could replicate it for free. Within months, he had been invited to the White House Science Fair, where he demonstrated Braigo to President Obama.

In November 2014, Intel Capital made an investment in Braigo Labs — Banerjee's company, which he had founded with his parents — making him the youngest entrepreneur ever to receive Intel Capital funding. The terms were not disclosed, but the significance of the investment went beyond the money: Intel Capital was one of the most respected technology venture funds in the world, and it was betting on a thirteen-year-old's company to develop next-generation assistive technology. The deal brought not just capital but access to Intel's engineering teams, manufacturing knowledge, and global distribution networks.
The next iteration of the product — Braigo v2.0 — moved beyond LEGO into purpose-built hardware. Working with Intel engineers and using Intel's Edison chip as the computational foundation, Banerjee designed a dedicated Braille printer that was smaller, faster, and more durable than the original LEGO version, while maintaining a price point orders of magnitude below traditional Braille embossers. The goal was to produce a device that schools in developing countries, individual families, and small nonprofits could actually afford to purchase — not just as a curiosity but as a practical tool for Braille literacy.

It was not a demonstration of technical competence for its own sake. It was a thirteen-year-old who asked why something was expensive, figured out a cheaper way to make it, built a prototype, made it open source, and then turned it into a company that Intel thought worth funding. The narrative arc — from candy wrapper curiosity to venture capital — compressed into less than a year, by a teenager. Braigo Labs continued to operate as Banerjee worked through high school, developing the product further and pursuing the goal that had animated the original project: putting Braille printers within reach of the 90% of visually impaired people who currently had no access to them.
