How it started

The Chess Drum's 2017 account of her career begins in Alaska. Shabazz, born in Denver, Colorado, learned the game at 12 during a severe winter, in a cabin, with her family around her. What followed was not a gradual club career but a household reorganised around one child's chess: her parents, Yusef and Raqiba Shabazz, moved the family between cities in search of the best training, and eventually settled in Washington, DC.

The results came quickly. She passed a 2000 rating, the threshold for the Expert title in the United States rating system, placing her in the 98th percentile of American players and sixth on the national women's list. She travelled to England for the World Under-16. By 15 she had a seat at the US Women's Championship.

1981, and the cameras

The 1981 US Women's Championship was the peak of her visibility and, by The Chess Drum's reading, the turning point of her career. She played it at 15. She did not play well, and she became despondent afterwards.

The attention around her was substantial for a teenage chess player in that era. ABC News interviewed her for a segment broadcast on 9 June 1981. National print media covered her, and Chicago Metro News ran a piece on 4 December 1982. A young Black woman at the top of American women's chess was, in 1981, a story that newspapers understood how to tell, and the coverage arrived faster than any player's results could justify.

Why she stopped

The Washington Post returned to her in January 1988 in a piece headlined Ex-Queen's Gambit. Its account, as The Chess Drum summarises it, is of pressure that became stifling, and of a game that had a destabilising effect on the family that had reorganised itself around it.

Her last tournament was the 1983 World Open. She was 17. Afterwards she moved to England. The Chess Drum records that she still took tremendous joy from the game even after leaving competition, which is a different thing from resenting it, and worth stating plainly given how the story is usually told.

Where she is now

Undocumented. The Chess Drum's 2017 piece is titled as a revisiting precisely because the trail had gone cold: it establishes that she moved to England after 1983 and does not establish where she went after that. No source used here gives her current whereabouts, occupation or name today.

Her birth year is not stated in these sources either. The figure given on this page is derived from her reported age of 15 at the 1981 championship and should be treated as approximate.

Why the story keeps returning

Shabazz's name resurfaces whenever the subject of chess prodigies and the cost of early specialisation comes up, and it resurfaced again with the popularity of fictional accounts of a teenage American woman at the top of the game. The Washington Post's 1988 headline, Ex-Queen's Gambit, was using the chess opening; the phrase has since acquired a second meaning.

What separates her from the fiction is the documented part: a real family that moved repeatedly, a real rating that put her in the top percentile of American players, a real television crew, and a real decision at 17 to stop. Chess in the early 1980s had almost no support structure for a teenage player carrying that much expectation, and the sources here describe the consequences in the family's own terms rather than in the language of talent lost.
