The championship that made him the youngest
The Kenya National Chess Championship is an open event: no age brackets, no concessions, a full field of the country's strongest adult players. Simiyu, a pupil at Moi Primary and Junior School in Kabarak, won its open section at 13. FIDE, the world chess federation, reported the result in January 2026, describing a highly competitive championship taken by Simiyu alongside Julie Mutisya in the women's section.
The Daily Nation, Kenya's largest newspaper, gave the record its clearest framing: the youngest national chess champion the country has ever had. He had also gone in as the youngest top seed in the tournament's history, meaning the rating list already had him ahead of the field before a move was played.
The cars
Kenyan chess made news twice over. Both champions, Simiyu and Mutisya, were awarded brand-new cars, a prize scale unusual anywhere in the game and unprecedented in Kenyan chess. ChessBase covered the presentation; People Daily reported the two teenage winners walking away with vehicles.
The prize was more than a curiosity. Sponsorship at that level signals an intent to make competitive chess a viable pursuit in a country where players have historically funded their own travel to international events.
FIDE Master at 13
Simiyu holds the FIDE Master title, the third rung of the international federation's ladder below International Master and Grandmaster, and he is the youngest Kenyan to have earned it. The title is awarded on rating rather than by committee, which makes it an objective marker of where a player stands against the international field.
The Chess Drum, which tracks African and diaspora chess, profiled him in June 2026 as Kenya's rising star, the standard description for a player whose national results have outgrown his domestic opposition.
Where Jadon Simiyu is now
He has qualified for Kenya's team at the 2026 Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the biennial team tournament in which national squads of five play each other over a fortnight. For a 13-year-old it is the sharpest possible step up: Olympiad boards put players against grandmasters from federations with professional training systems.
Nothing in the sources used here reports his current rating, his coaching arrangements or his results at the Olympiad itself. Those remain open.

Пройти тест IQ →What a national title at 13 actually means
National championships are the hardest domestic events a player can enter. There is no junior section to shelter in, the time controls are long, and the field is stacked with players who have spent twenty years accumulating opening knowledge and endgame technique. A 13-year-old winning one has not simply beaten children of his own age; he has out-prepared and outlasted adults across a nine or eleven round tournament.
African chess has produced a run of such results in recent years, and the pattern behind them is consistent: early identification, entry into senior events rather than age groups, and sponsorship that keeps a young player in competition long enough to improve. Simiyu's case has all three, plus the element that makes it travel further than most, which is a federation and a sponsor willing to treat a schoolboy champion as a national sporting figure rather than a novelty.
