Nothing deducted

A total of 42 is the ceiling at the olympiad, and reaching it requires every problem to be solved to the satisfaction of the coordinators who mark the scripts, including the questions written to separate the strongest contestants from one another. The scoreboard lists Liu at that ceiling, under the team code CHN3, in first place with a gold medal.

Second place went to Yuxuan Meng, also of China, on 38. Magdalena Pudełko of Poland was third on 37 and Amber Li of Australia fourth on 36. Four points is a wide margin at the top of an olympiad table, where leaders are more often separated by one or two.

The 2025 field

The competition was held in Prishtina, Kosovo, with 214 contestants. The scoreboard identifies each of them by a country code and a team position — CHN3, POL1, GER1 — which is how olympiad tables record that national teams are small and numbered rather than open entries.

Below fourth place the order ran: Tina Ding of Germany and Netta Ilani of Israel joint fifth on 35, Angela Liu of the United States seventh on 34, Yuqi Lan of China eighth on 33, and Anna Kazhamiakina of Italy and Hannah Fox of the United States joint ninth on 32. Four national programmes filled the top ten more than once.

One perfect paper, two years running

The following April, at the 2026 olympiad in Bordeaux, the pattern repeated exactly: 247 contestants, one perfect score, and it belonged to Huaijin Lou of China. In both years the setters produced a paper that stopped every entrant in the room but one.

That is a statement about the difficulty of the questions rather than about any individual's limits. It also puts a figure on how uncommon Liu's result is: across the two editions documented here, two perfect papers were written among 461 contestants.

What is documented — and what is not

Firm: the perfect score of 42, first place, the gold medal, China as the country, and the 2025 olympiad in Prishtina as the competition, in a field of 214. The scoreboard is published by the organisers, which makes it a primary record.

Open: no age, birth year, school, city or photograph appears in the sources gathered here, and no interview or press profile is among them. Nothing states how Liu was selected, whether she competed in other years, or what she has done since April 2025.

Why the scoreboard is the whole record

Competitive mathematics documents its results better than almost any other youth pursuit and its participants hardly at all. Every problem score is published, permanently, by the body that ran the competition; the contestant behind the row is usually a schoolchild whose name appears nowhere else on the internet.

The consequence is a page like this one: certain about what happened over two mornings in Prishtina, and silent about everything around it. Winning an olympiad outright is the rarest outcome the format allows, and for most winners it is also the only thing the public record will ever show.
