New Delhi, July 2019. The Commonwealth Chess Championship U18 is under way, and a sixteen-year-old from Erode — a textile city in the Kaveri delta of Tamil Nadu — is playing chess of extraordinary certainty. Round by round, his score climbs. He wins. He wins again. He does not draw. He does not lose. When the final round concludes, Panneerselvam Iniyan has scored seven points from seven games — a perfect score in a championship. Every game played, every game won. That is what perfection looks like in chess: not a single opponent finding a way through.

Erode is not a place most chess followers would name on a map. It is a mid-sized city in interior Tamil Nadu, more associated with turmeric trading and textile mills than with international chess grandmasters. But Tamil Nadu is the chess heartland of India. The state produced Viswanathan Anand — five-time World Chess Champion — and has been the engine behind much of India's chess growth across four decades. When a child in Erode picks up chess, they enter an ecosystem of training, competition, and aspiration that stretches from district championships all the way to the world stage.

Iniyan — known professionally by his initial and surname, P. Iniyan — began playing chess young and moved quickly. By the time he was fourteen, he had become Erode's first ever International Master — a milestone that made local news and drew the attention of the wider Tamil Nadu chess community. His chess was marked from the beginning by tactical sharpness and an ability to find resources in difficult positions. In June 2017, playing at the Ciutat de Montcada open in Spain, he earned his first Grandmaster norm. Further norms followed at Böblingen in February 2018 and Barberà del Vallès in July 2018.

"P. Iniyan has demonstrated exceptional discipline in his chess — earning three GM norms across Spain and Germany before his sixteenth birthday, a path that reflects both talent and serious professional commitment."

— ChessBase India, on Iniyan's path to the GM title

The Grandmaster title arrived when he was still sixteen — making him India's 61st grandmaster, a number that feels both large and precise. Large because it reflects India's extraordinary depth of chess talent. Precise because in chess, every number matters. Iniyan was 61st. He earned it through international competition in Europe, not through curated domestic tournaments, and the toughness of that path shaped the competitive player he became.

At the 2017 World Youth Chess Olympiad in Ahmedabad, he earned an individual gold medal on the fourth board with 7.5 points from 8 games — a performance that contributed to India's team result and demonstrated his ability to deliver in a team environment where every half-point carries collective consequence. The following year, his perfect 7/7 at the Commonwealth U18 Championship was the kind of result that tournament chess rarely produces — a clean sweep against the best young Commonwealth players, with no opponent finding a weakness to exploit.

"He scored a perfect 7 out of 7 — there's simply no margin left. That's not just winning a tournament. That's setting a standard."

— Chess commentator, Commonwealth U18 Championship, New Delhi, 2019

His senior career continued developing through careful selection of European opens alongside major Indian events. In 2025, he won the 62nd Indian National Chess Championship — the premier domestic title in a country now producing grandmasters at a pace unmatched anywhere in the world. To be national champion in India in 2025 is to be the best in one of the deepest player pools in global chess. Iniyan, at 22, was that player. The boy from Erode with the perfect score had become the champion of a chess nation.

Indian National Chess Championship — India's most prestigious domestic title

Why This Matters

Chess talent in India is no longer confined to Chennai or Delhi. It comes from Thanjavur, from Erode, from cities that appear on no chess map — until a local prodigy earns a GM title and changes what is possible in the imagination of every child playing chess in that city. P. Iniyan is that story for Erode. He became its first International Master. He became a grandmaster at sixteen. He won a championship with a perfect score. And in 2025, he became the national champion of a country where the national championship is contested by 80+ grandmasters. The path from Erode to the top of Indian chess took years of European tournaments, discipline, and belief. He walked every step of it.
