An 18-year-old settled a long-standing problem about hypergraphs, and took third in America's top science contest

Third place and $150,000 at the Regeneron Science Talent Search, 11 March 2025

On 11 March 2025 Owen Jianwen Zhang, an 18-year-old from Bellevue, Washington, was awarded third place and $150,000 at the Regeneron Science Talent Search. His entry solved a long-standing problem about 3-uniform hypergraphs, establishing maximum values for structures that share properties but differ in how their parts connect.

What he solved

The Society for Science describes Zhang's work as the solution of a long-standing mathematical problem involving 3-uniform hypergraphs, in which he established maximum values for structures with similar properties but differing connection patterns. The Society notes applications in computer science.

A graph joins points in pairs. A hypergraph allows an edge to join more than two points at once; in a 3-uniform hypergraph every edge joins exactly three. That small change makes counting questions far harder, because the neat tools that work for pairs stop working, and extremal problems - how large can a structure be before it is forced to contain a particular pattern - become open problems that stay open for decades.

Why such problems resist

Extremal questions about hypergraphs are known in mathematics as some of the most stubborn in combinatorics. Establishing a maximum means proving two things at once: that no structure can exceed a bound, and that something reaching that bound exists. The first half is where most attempts fail.

The Society's note that the result has applications in computer science is not decoration. Hypergraphs model databases, constraint problems and networks in which relationships involve more than two parties, and bounds of this kind set limits on what algorithms over those objects can be made to do.

The 2025 competition

The 84th Regeneron Science Talent Search awarded $3.1 million in total and $1.8 million to 40 finalists, at a ceremony at the National Building Museum in Washington on 11 March 2025. Zhang's third place carried $150,000.

First place and $250,000 went to Matteo Paz, 18, of Pasadena, California, for machine-learning analysis of 200 billion entries of infrared survey data. Second place and $175,000 went to Ava Grace Cummings of Smithfield, North Carolina, for a fruit-fly model of a rare muscle disease. Three very different disciplines, three placements, one week of judging.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented: third place, the $150,000 award, his age of 18, his home town of Bellevue, Washington, and the subject of the work as the Society describes it.

Not documented in these sources: the precise statement of the problem, the name it goes by in the literature, whether the proof has been published or refereed, his school, his mentors, and where he has gone since. This page therefore does not state which conjecture was settled, because the sources used here do not name one.

How young mathematicians get judged

The Science Talent Search is unusual in judging a mathematics entry on the same stage as a biology or engineering one. Finalists defend their work before a panel of scientists in Washington, which means a proof has to be explained as well as written - to specialists from outside the field.

For a mathematician that is a particular test. The competition's highest placements have historically gone more often to laboratory work, which photographs well and explains quickly. A top-three finish for pure combinatorics says something about how completely the argument had to be understood by the person carrying it.
