🇨🇦 Juveria Zaheer

The route back in

Jeopardy! built the Second Chance tournament for players like Zaheer: contestants who lost a single game against an unusually strong champion and never got a second night. She won her Second Chance event in December, one of four winners announced together with Xanni Brown, Matt Harvey and Long Nguyen, and that win carried her into the next tier.

The champion who had beaten her, Hannah Wilson, had run to eight games in the same season. Losing to an eight-game champion is not an ordinary first-round exit, and the tournament structure exists precisely because the show recognised how much good play it was discarding.

The Champions Wildcard final

Jeopardy.com reported on 2 February 2024 that Zaheer had won Group One of the Champions Wildcard. The final was played over two days and settled on cumulative score: Zaheer finished on $20,000, ahead of Andy Tirell on $14,800 and Michael Menkhus on $2,799. First place paid $100,000, second $50,000 and third $25,000.

The prize came with a seat at the Tournament of Champions, which began on 23 February 2024. In three tournament stages, Zaheer had gone from a one-game loser to a six-figure winner with a place in the show's premier event.

What she said about it

Her reaction, as the show quoted it, was measured rather than triumphant. "I have had the most wonderful journey," she said. "And the players I met today are just extraordinary." Of the money: "It sounds fake. I can't imagine it. What a gift."

She also named the part that mattered most to her. "As a woman, especially a woman of colour, as a mom," she said, "I had so many people say, my daughters watched you." Quiz television is a narrow stage, but it is a national one, and Zaheer treated the visibility as the prize rather than a side effect.

Where the record goes after 2024

The research file for this page records a runner-up finish at Jeopardy! Masters in 2025, in a tournament whose top prize is $250,000, and lists her as a participant in the 2026 edition. Those two items are drawn from an encyclopedia summary of the Masters series rather than from the Jeopardy.com articles used above, and they are flagged here as unconfirmed for that reason.

What is firm is that Masters is an invitational: the show picks a small field from its strongest recent champions. An invitation, if the record is right, would place Zaheer among the handful of players the programme regards as its best, which is a long way from a first-round loss.

What is documented, and what is not

Documented by Jeopardy.com: her occupation as a psychiatrist, her home in Whitby, Ontario, that she is a mother of two, the Second Chance win in December, the Champions Wildcard win reported on 2 February 2024, the scores and prize money, and the Tournament of Champions start date of 23 February 2024.

Not documented in these sources: her age or date of birth, where she studied or practises, her family's names, and her exact results in the Tournament of Champions. One further note on geography. The research record filed her under the United States because Jeopardy! is an American programme; the show's own page gives her home as Whitby, Ontario, in Canada, and this page follows the show.
